Pres. Barack Obama quoted that, “Reading is the gateway skill that makes all other learning
possible.” That is why, San Antonio Elementary School framed a program that involve reading
enhancement for struggling readers of Grades 1-3 learners. Before the said program started the
reading coordinator together with the other English and Filipino teachers conducted a reading
assessment to assess the reading skills of the incoming grades 1-3 students. After the assessment
the reading coordinator list down the names of the students who will undergo the reading
program. As the project proposal was approved by the school principal, Brigada Pagbasa was
planned for the Implementation of the program and look for the possible volunteer reading
teachers. After we had successfully outsourced volunteer reading teachers, the School Reading
Coordinator for English and Filipino conducted a short training and orientation for them, last
August, 2022. They were given the knowledge about the elements of reading to achieve
comprehension and few strategies and possible activities to be done with the students. After the
successful orientation, the implementation of the program started. The reading lesson began last
September 2022 until June 2023 every Saturday in the morning. The reading teachers were
assigned with different reading lessons to teach the students. Students actively participated in
each session and learned in fun ways. On the last day, we provided them a mini graduation to
recognize their participation in the Saturday sessions of the reading class and they were able to
receive a school supplies starter pack given by our generous sponsors. Overall, the program was
implemented smoothly, and it was a success. Teachers planned to continue the project and hope
the program will help advocates continuity in learning through reading until the end of the school
year.
