Power System

 One of the major component of the rig.

Its primary function is to support all of the other system

by providing a source for the energy requirements of
modern rotary drilling operations.

Success of all drilling operations is dependent upon how
well power requirements are met.
The 2 major Sub-
Components of the
Power System!!
1.PRIMARY SOURCE
 for a rotary drilling complex is usually
provided by large internal combustion engines
called the “ prime movers”.

units, although some are still
three major advantages over gas

units:
replacement were that:
 they do not have spark ignition 1. The units were subject to more
system. breakdown.
 A diesel engine’s efficiency 2. The unit provided insufficient

 A diesel engine is more efficient 4. Gas is becoming increasingly hard

BASIC POWER DISTRIBUTION ON A RIG
COMPLEX
 a modern rotary drilling complex cannot
function unless sufficient power is available
and distributed. Almost no area in the rig is
without power requirement. Most of the
power generated is used by the draw works,
rotary, and mud pumps, additional power is
needed for rig lightning preparation and
conditioning equipment, rig instruments,
engine fans, air conditioners, etc.
2.POWER TRANSMISSION
 From the prime movers to the major working
system is accomplished by one of two
methods, depending on the type of engines
being used. The methods are:

• Mechanical Transmission
• Electrical Transmission
MECHANICAL POWER TRANSMISSSION ELECTRIC POWER TRANSMISSION

 It means that the power  On most modern drilling rigs,

generated by the engines must be diesel-electric and electric power
mechanically transmitted. This units deliver current through

a control cabinet. From the cable
cabinet, the electric power is
transmitted through the
conditional cables to electric
motors that are directly
connected to the system’s
equipment.
PRIME POWER UNIT
 The primary engines that supply power to a
rotary drilling complex are the prime movers.
Almost all rigs use for internal combustion
engines. Rigs are classified as being either gas,
diesel or diesel-electric. The number of
engines used is determined by the anticipated
power requirements at the well, based on the
casing program and well depth.
Prime Mover Locations
a. Under Rig b. On The Floor
Their location is dependent on many
factors:

• 1. The Power Transmission System Employed.

• 2. Availability of Space.
c. Next to the Rig d. Away from Rig
