Transforming Expressions
with Rational Exponents to
Radical Form and Vice
Versa
Hello! I’m Kara. Are you ready
for another fun-filled adventure
with Mathematics? Come and
let’s explore the beauty of
transforming expressions with
rational exponents to radical
form, and vice versa.
Recalling expressions
with rational exponents

Expressions with rational exponents are

expressions with exponents of the form, ,
where m and n are integers and .
Examples: , , and
Definition of Radical
Expression

The expression is called radical. A radical expression or

radical is an expression containing the symbol √ called radical
sign. In symbol , n is called the index or order which indicates the
degree of the radical such as square root √, cube rootand fourth
root am is called the radicand which is a number or expression
inside the radical symbol and m is the power or exponent of the
radicand.

EXAMPLES
Transforming Expressions with
Rational Exponents to Radical Form

Illustrative Eample 1:
823 382 364

In this example ,
8 is written inside the radical symbol.
2 is written as an exponent of 8.
3 is written as the index or order.
always simplify to get the final answer, thus
becomes 64.
Illustrative Example 2:

Illustrative Example 2:

In the example (3a)12

3a- will be placed inside
the radical sign. (3a)12 2(3a)1

2- is written as the index

1-is written as the

exponent of 3a.
So here, the radicand 5
becomes now the base,
with its exponent 1 as the
numerator and the index 3
as the denominator in the
rational exponent. Same
process with the other
examples.
REMEMBER

Key Points
 =, and vice versa. The index becomes the denominator, and the
exponent in the radicand becomes the numerator in the rational
exponent.
 It is important to note that when the index does not appear in the
radical sign, it is understood that the index is 2.
