The THREE Approaches in
Instructional Supervision

1. Directive

2. Collaborative

3. Nondirective
What are the three approaches in instructional
supervision?

1. Directive
 Teachers who have low conceptual thinking, expertise, and
commitment to their teaching.
 Teachers at earlier stages of development that often have
problems in making decisions and defining problems, and have
learned few ways of responding to problems.

Instructional leader as the expert is in charge of writing

goals for the teacher.

Glickman et al. (2013)

What are the three approaches in instructional
supervision?

2. Collaborative

 Teachers at moderate levels of abstract thinking, expertise, and

commitment are best matched with collaborative assistance.

Instructional leader and the teacher establish goals, identify

how they will be achieved, and as a team note when the
achievement should be noticed.

Glickman et al. (2013)

What are the three approaches in instructional
supervision?

3. Nondirective
 Teachers who think abstractly and demonstrate high expertise
and commitment to teaching are best matched with
nondirective assistance
 Teachers are allowed to be in control of how and when the
goals will be achieved.
Instructional leader is still involved, but takes a more passive role in the
supervisory process. He is only listening, reflecting, clarifying, encouraging,
and problem solving.

Glickman et al. (2013)
