Some Examples
18.1 Ratios
Ratios are used to compare two or more
quantities.

Example:
The ratio of triangles to squares is

4:3
Exercise: Write down Ratios to compare the
following quantities.
1) 5 yellow blocks to 3 green blocks
yellow : green = 5 : 3
2) 10 boys to 14 girls
boys : girls = 10 : 14
3) 50 ml water : 5 ml orange
water : orange = 50 : 5
18.2 Simplifying Ratios

The ratio of yellow to green blocks is


yellow : green = 4 : 2
Which can be simplified to:
4:2
÷2 ÷2

2:1
Exercise: Simplify the following:

1) 5 : 10 2) 7 : 21
1:2 1:3
3) 12 : 8 4) 6 cm : 15 cm
3:2 2:5
5) 2 m : 30 cm 6) 500 g : 3 kg
