Introduction:
Ratios
A ratio compares two or more values.

A ratio says how much of one thing there is compared to another thing.

We can say: “There are 3 orange squares TO 1 purple square”

We write this in maths as: Orange : Purple

We can also say: “There is 1 purple square to 3 orange squares”

Purple : Orange

1 Write the ratio of GREEN squares to WHITE squares (Green : White)

A ratio can be scaled up and down.

Here is the ratio 3 oranges to 1 purple.

Orange : Purple
3:1

We can scale it up to make the ratio 6 oranges to 2 purples.

Orange : Purple
6:2

Here the ratio is also 3 oranges to 1 purple, even though there are more
squares. Can you explain why this is?

Ben the painter needs 6 litres of dark purple, he uses 4 litres of red
paint and 2 litres of blue paint.

Write the ratio of the number of red tins to the number of blue tins in
its simplest form.

Ratios
The ratio of boys to girls in a class is 3 : 2. There are 15 boys in the
class. How many girls are there?
