Plot
Exposition
The author introduced the characters differently from
other author because he characterized them not
according to their physical appearance. Chinua Achebe
then presented the main characters of the story, Rufus
Okeke as a well known man in Umuofia who was once a
bicycle repairer before he worked for Marcus Ibefor the
election campaign. He introduced what politics and
power can do to people and community, as well as how
the politicians give influence to the peopleand how they
exercise their power.
Complication
And so the story was getting interesting when
Roof worked and was appointed to be the head of the
campaign for the election under Marcus Ibe, who was
the current chief of the town. Marcus managed to
made himself a house as big as he can and he also
made sure to have the power aqq water supply only for
himself. Marcus appointed Roof for only one reason
and it was to make sure that he will win the election,
he then told Roof to talk to the elders to get their trust
and so he did.
Crisis
It didn't end there, because things are just
getting started and the author presented a new
problem to the main character. A test wherein
his loyalty and his greed are the choices because
one day the leader of the other party came to see
him that shocked his whole being. He was asked
to vote for them and betray Marcus in exchange
for gift and iyi.
Climax
The election came and people are starting to
vote and choose their future leader. Here the
author made it more exciting because Roof was
having a second thought about his paper. He felt
guilty to think that he will betray his boss or the
iyi. It is the power he will hold after Marcus win
the election or the iyi they presented to him in
exchange for his loyalty.
Denouement
Roof decided to tear his paper
into two and put each on the
boxes. This is the resolution
that the main character came
up with for his problem.
Ending
In the end he couldn't
take to betray his boss
as well as the iyi.
Setting
The setting of the story was
in Umuofia and based from
how the author described the
place, it was a poor
community as the people
don't even have electricity
nor water supply.
Character
1. RUFUS OKEKE (ROOF) -he was
introduced with a good trait which was
being hardworking. His character gives
a different impression as he was easily
shaken and he can't stand on his own
ground. He was selfish, greedy and
mostly he was not loyal.
2. Marcus Ibe -He was a greedy
character who only thinks about
himself, a corrupt and does whatever
he wants because he has the power to
do so. He gives importance but only
for those things and people that will
benefit him.
3. Elders -Their character was
selfish and corrupt, they didn't
even argue and wholeheartedly
accepted the money for their
own interest.
Protagonist: Rufus Okeke
(Roof)

Antagonist:
Marcus Ibe
Mr. Maduka
Manduka's Campaign
Manager
Ogbuefi Ezenwa
Point of
View
The story is told from a third person
omniscient point of view in which the
author is the narrator of the story. He
seems to know everything in the plot
of the story even the thoughts of
Characters like Roof
Theme
The theme of the story was so
transparent and obvious. Power,
loyalty, greed and corruption were
presented multiple times that is
why readers can actually tell it
easier.
Conflict
The story has several conflicts. The
following are some of the • Intrapersonal
conflict. Rufus Ckeke suffers intrapersonal
conflict when he is confronted with the
dilemma on who he has to vote for.

Maduka's Progressive Oraganisation Party

(POP)
vs
Marcus Ibe's People's Alliance Party (PAP)
Moral
In choosing a leader as an individual, we
should not be shaken any power and
money in exchange for our future.
Corruption will never vanish in Politics
the only difference is the people who will
choose the next leader.
