ACCIDENTAL INJURY
• An injury is a damage to your body.
• It is a general term that refers to the
accidents, falls, hits and weapons
• Accidental injury is an injury occurring due to
unforeseen circumstances
• Examples include:
• Road accidents, falls, drowning, cuts, stings
• Non accidental injury or physical abuse is any
bodily injury that is deliberately inflicted on a
vulnerable person.
• What are the examples of non
accidental injuries?
• Examples of non accidental injuries include:
• Biting
• Kicking
• Hitting
• Burning
Genetic and congenital conditions
• Genetic condition occurs when you inherit an
altered gene from parents that increases your
risk of that particular disorder
• A congenital condition is an inherited medical
condition that occurs at or before birth
Causes of congenital conditions
• Approximately 50% cannot be linked to
specific causes. However some causes are as
follows:
• Environmental factors e.g.
– Maternal exposure to certain medications,
pesticides, tobacco, alcohol, and radiation during
pregnancy may increase the risk of having a fetus
affected by congenital abnormalities
– Working or living near waste sites or mines
• Infections e.g.
– Syphilis
– rubella
• Maternal nutritional status e.g.
– excessive vitamin A may affect the normal
development of the fetus
• How can we prevent
congenital conditions?????
Prevention of congenital conditions
• Ensuring adolescent girls and mothers have a
healthy diet
• Adequate dietary intake of vitamins and
minerals in adolescent girls and mothers
• Ensuring mothers and adolescent avoid alcohol
and tobacco
• Eliminating or reducing environmental exposure
to hazardous substances e.g. pesticides
• Controlling diabetes before and during pregnancy
through counseling, wet management and diet
• Avoid administering medications to pregnant
women that have teratogenic effects
• Vaccinating women against rubella virus
• Screening for infections especially syphilis and
rubella
• Health education on congenital conditions
