AN ANALYSIS OF ZITA

SUMMARY
● It was midday when Turong together with a young and lonely man
arrived in Anayat. Mr. Reteche steps on the shores of Anayat, his
loneliness is apparent for the villagers. Don Eliodoro, father of Zita
offered a rom to Mr. Reteche. But, he chose Turong’s house, a shaky
hut near the sea rather than a big stone building with azotea which
they prepares for him. Zita told to his father what happened in their
first day at school, she told to his father an incident when Mr. Reteche
was begging to tell him that Zita was not her real name, that she was
deceiving him. he looked misebrale and sick after Zita insisted that it
is not just a pet name.
● The teacher keeps on receiving letter. Turong observed Mr. Reteche and
he told to the people of Anayat what he observed, he was looking to
space, seeing nobody most especially after handling and reading the
letter which he had receive every month.
● Zita Never forget the look in his face why those letter were bothering
him. Don Eleodoro asks Mr. Reteche to teach his daughter how to be a
lady. He agrees and teaches her how to dress, act and dance like a fine
lady from the city. One day he told Zita to dress accordingly as he
teaches her a Spanish dance.
● He seemed so serious and intent she should learn quickly but he did
not deceive her. Zita felt how his heart was beating when it happened to
lean close to her.
● Mr. Reteche doesn’t show any affection towards her. Their dance was
paused by Turong, who hands him a blue envelope. Surprisingly, he tore
the unopened envelope as he thought he had forgotten everything that
change the whole evening.
● Zita asked him why he tears in when he will only pick them up and put it
together. Mr. Reteche replied that someday she will understand. One day
Turong brought a stranger, old friend of Mr. Reteche from where he came.
● Everybody had gone to the seashore while Zita handled a letter given by
Turong from Mr. Reteche saying that she would understand. She tore the
paper but later on realized to put the pieces and a great understanding had
come to her.
THEME
● Unrequited Love
Zita have been acting like children, pursuing what she
want regardless of consequences; making herself
unhappy (temporary happiness only)
Zita in this case, had a free fall into love, she
developed feelings for Mr. Reteche without
considering the possible consequences
SETTING
is a wonderful and peaceful place
The sky hangs over Anayat, in the
middle of the Anayat Sea, like an
inverted wineglass, a glass whose wine
had been spilled, a purple wine of
which Anayat was the last precious
drop. For that is Anayat in the
crepuscule, purple and mellow,
sparkling and warm and effulgent
when there is a moon, cool and heady

and sensuous when there is no moon.
CHARACTERS
Student from the province that shares the
ZITA name of someone she used to love. She
ends up falling for Mr. Reteche, her
teacher.

Mr. Reteche’s attitude is distant towards other people
because of his broken heart and he just wants to be alone
and push people away.

READER’S RESPONSE
● It reflected as moral, humanistic, and psychological approach.
Moral in a way that they can’t be together because of their
relationship as teacher and student. Humanistic because it
emphasizes the worth of the individual. Psychological in a way
that Mr. Reteche has a trauma in his past relationship.
● There are things we can’t perceive that is against the law in
Code of Ethics. And sometimes we cannot reciprocate the love
from the other person.
PLOT: INTRODUCTION
“Zita Story” is about a brokenhearted teacher who
comes to the land of Anayat. From the minute Mr.
Reteche steps on the shores of Anayat, his
lonesomeness is apparent for the villagers. He
comes across Zita, the innocent province girl who
who coincidentally has the same name as his past
lover.
