OBJECTIVES

At the end of this lesson, the students

should be able to:
1. define and write in sigma notation;
2. use the sigma notation to represent a
series;
3. enumerate the properties of sigma
notation and
4. calculate the sums using the properties of
sigma notation. 2

history
Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855) was a German
mathematician who contributed in many fields of
mathematics and science and is touted as one of history's
most influential mathematicians.

as an elementary student in the late 1700s,

amazed his teacher with how quickly he found
the sum of the integers from 1 to 100 to be
5,050. Gauss recognized he had fifty pairs of
numbers when he added the first and last
number in the series, the second and second-
last number in the series, and so on.

Definition
Sigma notation is a method used to denote and
express a long sum in a concise way. The
symbol is the Greek capital letter Sigma
which corresponds to the initial letter of the
word Sum. A sigma notation is in the form of
, where it is read as the summation of a
sub k as k goes from 1 to n .

The letter k is called the index of summation and it indicates where

to start the sum and it also gives the lower limit of the summation.
There are times that the index starts with another number other
than 1. The letter n tells the end of the numbers to add and it is
called the upper limit of the summation.
