Properties of Heat and How Heat

Travels
Lesson 3
Heat is energy in transit in a form of
thermal energy.

Thermal energy is produced by

continuous transfer of heat from one
particle to another particle in a material.
Heat Transfer

Heat can be given off or

transferred in three different
processes:

conduction
convection
radiation
Heat Transfer

Conduction is the transfer of

heat through solid materials
from one particle to another
by direct contact.
Heat Transfer

Convection is the transfer of

heat from one place to
another by the movement of
particles through fluids.
Heat Transfer

Radiation is the transfer of

heat even in the absence of
moving molecules.
Safety Measure When Using Fuels

• Butane, pentane, and mixtures of these gases are

liquefied and used as fuels.
- The cylinder should be kept in vertical position.
- Be sure to close the regulator when the gas is not
in use.
- Replace the rubber tubes regularly to prevent gas
leak.
Safety Measure When Using Fuels

• Car engine should be checked regularly especially

during hot season.
Safety Measure When Using Fuels

• Do not smoke when refilling fuel. Gas tank should

be kept away from open flame.
Safety Measure When Using Fuels

• In using wood for cooking or in a campfire, be

sure to extinguish or put out the fire after its use.
Safety Measure When Using Fire

• When using a lighted candle or a lamp, be sure to

keep it in a place away from combustible
materials.
• All firecrackers should be prohibited to children.
Safety Measure When Using Fire

• Stay away from people who light

fireworks/firecrackers.
• Do not pick up any firecracker or its left over after
it has been lit.
Safety Measure To Protect Homes and
Buildings from Fire
Fire Safety
• Keep matches, lighters, and candles away from children’s
reach.
• Always store combustible materials in a well-ventilated
space and away from any source heat.
• Turn off the LPG tank when noy in use.
• Dispose of cigarette butts properly.
• Do not leave the kitchen when food is being cooked.
• If you live in a house close to a field full of tall grasses and
shrubs, protect your home by cutting these grasses and
shrubs in order to form a clearing between your house and
the field.
Conditions Needed to Put Out Fire
• Lower the Temperature
• Remove oxygen from the burning material.
• In case of fire, do the following:
- If the fire is small, get a wet blanket and throw it over the fire.
- Be careful when using water in putting out fire because some fire
can get worse by throwing water on them.
- Before the fire becomes out of control, call for help.
- If you are caught in a building, avoid using any electrical type of
machine to escape from the fire.
- If your clothes are on fire, do not run.
- Be familiar with all the exits in your home or any building you are
in.
- Stay calm.
