The Use of Multi-media as a
method in Teaching Physical
Education
What is Multimedia?
The word multi and media are combined to form the word
multimedia. The word “multi” signifies “many.” Multimedia is a type
of medium that allows information to be easily transferred from one
location to another.

Multimedia is the presentation of text, pictures, audio, and video with

links and tools that allow the user to navigate, engage, create, and
communicate using a computer.

Multimedia refers to the computer-assisted integration of text,

drawings, still and moving images(videos) graphics, audio,
animation, and any other media in which any type of information can
be expressed, stored, communicated, and processed digitally.
Multimedia is being employed in a variety of disciplines,
including education, training, and business.
Applications of Multimedia
Multimedia indicates that, in addition to text, graphics/drawings,
and photographs, computer information can be represented using
audio, video, and animation. Multimedia is used in:

Education
In the subject of education, multimedia is becoming increasingly
popular. It is often used to produce study materials for pupils and to
ensure that they have a thorough comprehension of various
disciplines. Edutainment, which combines education and
entertainment, has become highly popular in recent years. This
system gives learning in the form of enjoyment to the user.
Components of Multimedia
1. Text
 Characters are used to form words, phrases, and
paragraphs in the text.
2. GRAPHICS
 Non-text information, such as a sketch, chart, or
photograph, is represented digitally.
 Pictures are more frequently used than words to
clarify concepts, offer background information,
and so on.
Components of Multimedia
3. Animations
 A sequence of still photographs is being
flipped through. It’s a set of visuals that give
the impression of movement. Animation is the
process of making a still image appear to
move.
4. Video
 Photographic images that appear to be in full
motion and are played back at speeds of 15 to 30
frames per second. The term video refers to a
moving image that is accompanied by sound, such
as a television picture.
Components of Multimedia

5. Audio
 Any sound, whether it’s music, conversation,
or something else.
 Sound is the most serious aspect of
multimedia, delivering the joy of music,
special effects, and other forms of
entertainment.

Cameras

 There are a range of hardware applications that can be used with

physical education departments. Video cameras can provide footage
of experienced performers in action and can be used to inspire, to
demonstrate correct techniques and to develop pupils’
understanding and knowledge of the subject.
 By reviewing their own actions, for example, pupils can evaluate and
improve their own games strategies, gymnastics sequences,
trampolining routines or dance compositions, particularly if they are
able to look at their performances in slow motion or from a different
viewing angle.

Film editing in PE
• Video footage taken in one lesson can be edited and used
at the beginning of the following lesson to highlight the
achievements of pupils but also to identify common faults.
• This enables teachers and pupils to study individual and
team performance across a range of activities.
• Teachers and pupils can compile footage taken from all
the different lessons and use the footage to show other
pupils in different classes what to expect using film-
editing software.
advantages of Multimedia
 When students have access to video content to watch outside of
class, class time can be used for comprehension checks,
discussion, and reinforcement of content.
 Multimedia content helps to vary and enhance the learning
process, and leads to better knowledge retention.
 Educational video can provide more opportunities for students to
engage with the content.
 Students around the world can learn from course content made
available through video.
 Video can sometimes demonstrate complex ideas and access
other times and places better than speaking can.
 Available for all type of audiences: It can be utilized for a wide
range of audiences, from a single individual to a group of people.
disadvantages of Multimedia
 Information overload – One of the biggest problems with multimedia is
information overload. The more time a person spends on the internet, the
more likely they are to feel overwhelmed by all the information available.
Additionally, research has shown that people are less productive when
using multiple media at a time.

 Limited interaction – The disadvantage of multimedia is that it’s hard for

users to interact with their content. People have limited ways in which
they can engage with the text, images and sounds on a website. It doesn’t
give them the same experience that they would get from visiting a
physical store.
 Consumes a lot of time – Multimedia is a resource that can be used to
create many different types of content. However, there are some
drawbacks to using this technology. One major downside is that
multimedia consumes a lot of time.
