AI- cytology

assessment of
hepatic lipid
content in dairy
cattle
Project Description
Brief description of the project
Project Scope
 Describe the work to be accomplished
A device (software+ hardware)  able to recognize hepatic lipid content from fine needle
biopsy liver samples, on field using cytology as its main principle. Study findings [1]
support that FNB (fine needle biopsy) liver cytology is a practical, minimally invasive
addition to the diagnostic toolkit for veterinary dairy herd health management,
particularly with regard to Hepatic Lipid content.
 What’s the purpose or business need for this project?
Clinical abnormalities associated with Hepatic Lipidosis in dairy cattle—including
metritis, mastitis, ketosis, abomasal displacement, and decreased reproductive
performance—result in decreased productivity and major economic losses; annual costs
of fatty liver in dairy cows in the United States have been estimated to be more than $60
million. In addition there is not many methods to assess hepatic lipid content om field.
Project Scope

 Is there a relationship to other projects?

Chemical extraction of triglyceride concentration from liver tissue remains the
gold standard for quantifying hepatic lipid content, but mass spectrometry is not
currently diagnostically practical.
Studies [1] also sought to compare the diagnostic performance of liver cytology, plasma
non-esterified fatty acid concentration ([NEFA]), and plasma β-hydroxybutyrate
concentration ([BHB]) derived from a measurement performed on whole blood, for
assessing HLC.  At present, there is no reliably accurate blood test, or combination of
tests, to quantify hepatic lipid content (HLC) or diagnose HL in cattle
Hepatic lipid content can be estimated in various ways, such as histologically using lipid-
soluble stains  by flotation of biopsy specimens in copper sulfate solutions of different
specific gravities, or ultrasonographically
Project Scope

 Who are the stakeholders?

Farmers and Veterinarians
 What work is out of scope for this project?
This project is not meant to focus on other cytological lesions of the liver other than
hepatic lipid content.
