The tense of aTenses?

Tense?
The Present Tense is used to state facts
or make generalizations.

Examples:

•Bill writes the letters.


•Peter is coming to our place.
•Alana attends the class every day.

What is Past Tense?
The Past Tense is used to narrate
events completed in the past.

Examples:

• Bill attended the program.


• Tom performed in the show.
• I prepared the design.

What is Tense Shifting?

Tense Shifting happens mostly in stories and
novels as the basic vehicle of narration.
A narrator is telling a story as it happened.
Sometimes, though, a writer will accidentally slip
into present tense without realizing it.

PRESENT TENSE TIP: Use the Present
Tense to make “timeless” statements or
generalizations that are not only true for the
time of the story but will continue to be true
indefinitely unless something happens to
change the situation.

PAST TENSE TIP: Use the Past Tense when


telling a story about something that was
completed in the past.

Correct all the verb tense errors in the following paragraph. The
number in parenthesis at the end of the paragraph indicates how
many errors you should find.

Last summer we discussed in our Geography class about Provence,


a region in the southeast corner of France, which bordered on Italy. The
name Provence referred to the fact that it was the first province created
by the ancient Romans outside the Italian peninsula. Today, Provence
still contained an amazing number of well-preserved Roman ruins. While
there were a few big towns on the coast, Provence was especially known
for its abundance of wildflowers in the spring. These flowers were used
to make some of the world’s most expensive perfumes. (7)
