Lesson 9.

Intersecting Chords and

Their Properties
Learning Competencies

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to do

the following:

● Prove theorems related to chords, arcs, central angles,

and inscribed angles (M10GE-IIc-d-1).

● Solve problems on circles (M10GE-IIf-2).

Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to

● Define the Intersecting Chords and Angles of

Intersecting Chords Theorems.

● State the proof of Intersecting Chords and Angles of

Intersecting Chords Theorems.

● Find angle and segment measures using the properties

of intersecting chords.
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to

● Solve word problems involving intersecting chords.

Have you been to a circus? It is amazing to see talented people
do impossible feats such as eating fire, leaping through
obstacles, or crossing a thin rope.
Imaging that you are watching the performance of two tightrope
walkers. In a circular circus arena, two ropes are attached to the
edge of the arena such that they cross one another.

Given these pieces of information, can you determine the

distance where the two ropes meet? You can solve for it using
some theorems involving intersecting chords.
In this lesson, you will learn about the different theorems
involving intersecting chords.
Essential Questions

● What is the relationship between the lengths of segments

in a circle?

● How can you apply the properties of intersecting chords in

solving problems on circles?

Intersecting Chords Theorem

This theorem states that if two chords of the same circle

intersect, then the products of their segments are equal.

Angles of Intersecting Chords Theorem

This theorem states that if two chords of the same circle

intersect, then the measure of the angle formed is equal to
half of the sum of the arc intercepted by the angle and the arc
intercepted by its vertical angle.
