Rizal in Ateneo in 1872…
June 1872, Dona Teodora was imprisoned for
2 and a half years on trumped up charges of
poisoning her brother’s wife.

February 17, 1872, the execution of

GOMBURZA. (because they were against
with how Spaniards govern our country.)
After the execution of the three martyrdom,
Jose was very hurt with what happened to one
of his brother’s closest priest who is Fr. Jose
Burgos.

Jose is the first in his family

to use the surname Rizal. (He
needs to officially changed
his surname because the
Spaniards are becoming
aware about Paciano being
close to Fr. Burgos.

He did not enter Ateneo de Manila as easy as it was. There
were dilemmas that Jose faces entering Ateneo de Manila .

(agricultural, commerce, surveying.)

emperor of his entire class.
The class is divided into 2:
Internos- boarders. (The Roman Empire)
Externos- non-boarders. (The Carthaginian Empire)

• Francisco de Paula Sanchez- Rizal’s proofreader and
corrector to his writings.

since he found poetry useless.

In April, 1877, Rizal, who was then nearly 16 years old., matriculated in the University of
Santo Tomas, taking Philosophy and Letters
He enrolled in this course for two reasons:
- His father liked it, and
- He was still “uncertain as to what career to follow”
Rizal as Thomasian
During his first-year term in the UST, he studied cosmology, metaphysics, theodicy, and history of Philosophy.

1878-1879 Rizal shifted to medicine for 2 reasons:

- He wanted to be a physician so that he might cure his mother’s failing eyesight.

- He consulted Father Pablo Ramon for a choice of career.

• While a freshman in UST, he took up a vocational course in Ateneo as perito agremensor or expert surveyor.

• He excelled in all subjects, obtaining gold medals in topography and agriculture.

• At the age of 17, he passed the final examination in the surveyinh course but was too young to be granted with the title.

- Who was tall girl, “almost as as Jose himself”, and had a regal bearing.

- But, as with Segunda, he stopped short of proposing marriage to Orang.

- In her letters to Rizal, Leonor signed her name as “taimis,” in order to hide their intimate relationship from their parents and friends.

- while studying as a freshman in UST, Jose experienced as injustice. He was whipped with a sword by a Spanish officer whom he failed to issue courtesy because of
darkness. In a letter to Bluementritt, dated March 21, 1887, he related: “I went to the Captain General but I could not obtain any Justice; my wound lasted two weeks.
