It is an American philosophy, which is a revolt against the
“formal/conventional/ traditional” system of education. It
became popular in 1929 when the economic depression of
USA adversely affected the educational system of the country.
The principle underlying progressive education have
influenced the modern educational theories and practices to a
very great extent all over the world.
02.

WHY TEACH?
Progressivist teachers teach to develop learners into
becoming ENLIGHTENED and INTELLIGENT
CITIZENS of a democratic society.

Teachers teach learners so that they may live life fully

NOW not to prepare them for adult life.
03.

WHAT TO TEACH?
NEED-BASED AND RELEVANT CURRICULUM

“responds to students’ needs and that relates to

students’ personal lives and experiences”
Progressivist accepts the IMPERMANENCE OF
LIFE and INEVITABILITY OF CHANGE.

• Gathering and evaluating information
• Problem-solving
Subjects given emphasis: NATURAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

Students are exposed to many NEW SCIENTIFIC,

TECHNOLOGICAL and SOCIAL DEVELOPMENTS, reflecting the
progressivist notion that progress and change are fundamental. In
addition, students solve problems in the classroom similar to those they
will encounter outside of the school house
04.

HOW TO TEACH?
Progressivist teacher employ EXPERIENTIAL METHODS
(one learns by doing).

JOHN DEWEY- most popular advocate of Progressivism

Book learning is no substitute for actual experience.
Progressivist teachers heavily rely on PROBLEM-
SOLVING METHODS (SCIENTIFIC METHOD).

Other “hands-on minds-on hearts-on” teaching methodology that

progressivist teachers use are FIELD TRIP during which students interact
with nature or society. Teachers also stimulates students through
THOUGHT-PROVOKING GAMES AND PUZZLES.
