Unit 2 – Reading Literature

Mowava Garcia-Fuller
March 9, 2022
Week 8
The Beginning of the End – Reflective Cover
Letter
The reflective cover letter is a highly detailed, thoughtful reflection on your work in this
class. It pushes you to focus on the following:
 on your sense of self as a writer;
 on the “learning behind the writing projects” that you’ve done;
 and on what conscious, deliberate connections you can make to work you will be doing next
semester and in your future academic, professional, and/or technical lives/careers.
Imagine that you’re writing for someone who doesn’t know you or your work, and you want to
show that person all you can about what you’ve done and written and learned, using your own
included drafts and revisions as evidence.
 This letter is basically an argument, where you—the writer—are aiming to convince the reader
that you’ve learned X, and here’s all the evidence. Writing the Reflective Cover Letter gives
you the opportunity to look hard at what you’ve done with writing in this class and where
you’re going with writing in the future.
 Please write this assignment in letter format. You can address the letter to your instructor, and/or
to your instructor and your class colleagues.
Observations – Rhetorical Analysis
 Lack of originality in essay titles.
Should represent the main theme of the article.
Use your Thesis as a guide to describe the Paper in 5 Words
It should hint at the summary of the essay.
 Lack of adhering to instructions.
Thesis statements and topic sentences were not
underlined.

 Poor introductory sentences.

 PIE Structure was not followed resulting in

disorganized and underdeveloped analysis.

*If you did not submit a draft, you were/will be given a

zero.
A reminder of the slide “Dedicated to the Procrastinators …”

Your intro must mention the video's speaker, the video's purpose, and the video's intended audience.
 Your thesis must be clearly defined and takes a firm position on the rhetorical effectiveness of the
speaker's choices. It is up to you to determine if the video being rhetorically analyzed is effective,
ineffective, or somewhere in between.
 Ensure that your thesis is placed at end of your introduction and is underlined.
 Ensure that each body paragraph starts with a clear topic sentence and they are all underlined.
 Ensure that your sole goal is to evaluate the rhetorical choices of the speaker not to extend or add
to the conversation of the video being rhetorically analyzed.
 Ensure that Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are your go-to focal points. The body of your
paper should feature instances of ethos, pathos, and logos as they are used in the video selected. If
ethos was used, provide the specific instance, and then explain why it was effective/ineffective for the
intended audience.
 You are to ensure that all body paragraphs feature the PIE structure-POINT-INFORMATION-
EXPLANATION
Reflective Cover Letter Requirements
 Discuss what your own expectations were for you as a writer, thinker, and learner at the
beginning of ENGL 1025. How have you grown as a writer (if you have)?
 What are you especially proud of this semester?  Why?
 Take me behind the scenes for the two significantly revised essays (rhetorical analysis and
literary analysis essays). For each one, discuss:
1. What specific changes you’ve made, why, and what the results of those changes are;
2.How it demonstrates your ability to write for different audiences and/or purposes. What
kinds of decisions do you make?  How?
3. How the process of both giving and receiving peer feedback affected your writing. What
did you learn about feedback? How did your experience with peer feedback in this course
compare with previous courses?
4.How the conception of your writing process(es) has changed this semester.
5.Consider where you’re headed next as a writer – choose one or two “next places” to
make some projections about (this could be next semester’s classes, your major classes, your life,
your work).  While you won’t likely be given these particular kinds of writing tasks again, what
underlying strategies about writing or how to approach writing/research have you learned about in
ENGL 1025 that you’d like to remember for other situations?  Why?
Timeline
 This writing project is not due until the end of the semester.

 This means that work on your reflective cover letter should be ongoing.

 I urge you to begin journaling about your writing process.

 Samples are available on the Moodle Page
