MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS

AND TRRANSAXLE
GROUP 3
DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GEARS USED
IN MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND TRANSAXLE

 A manual gearbox is essentially a gear box that allows the driver to

select from a variety of gear ratios to operate the vehicle. Higher
gear ratios provide less torque but more speed, while lower gear
ratios provide more torque but less speed. The term "speed" is
frequently used to describe different gear ratios, therefore a "six-
speed" manual transmission has six forward gear ratios.
 The manual transmission is made up of three shafts with
continuously meshing gears of various sizes. By the clutch, the input
shaft is connected to the engine. The countershaft, which includes
several gears, is continuously meshing with the input shaft. The
driveshaft and subsequently the wheels are connected by the output
shaft via the countershaft. The output shaft is connected to the
transfer case first in cars with four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. A
fourth shaft typically has reverse gear to facilitate a direction shift.
DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GEARS USED
IN MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND TRANSAXLE

 The actual gears themselves do not have a fixed position relative to

the output shaft. On the other hand, locking collars spin with the
drive shaft and can shift or slide back and forth to engage a gear. We
refer to it as "shifting" gears as a result. The input shaft and
countershaft are spinning, as are the output shaft gears, when there
is no gear selected and the clutch is released. However, the output
shaft is immobile since none of the locking collars are engaged.
DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GEARS USED
IN MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND TRANSAXLE

 A transaxle combines an
integrated transmission,
axle, and differential. It
combines an axle and
differential with a
transmission's ability to
change gears. A
transmission solely
manages gear changes and
driveshaft-to-differential
power transfer.
FUNCTION OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND
TRANSAXLE

 Transmissions and transaxles are both parts of

the drivetrain that send power to the wheels.
While having the same objective, they operate
in different ways. A transaxle combines an
integrated transmission, axle, and differential.
It combines an axle and differential with a
transmission's ability to change gears. A
transmission solely manages gear changes and
driveshaft-to-differential power transfer.

- Connects to the rear axle through - Has two output shafts that connect to the
the driveshaft drive wheels through a pair of half shafts
- Allows for larger engine - Has a smaller, more compact design
displacements
- Can be automatic, manual, CVT, or - Usually automatic, but can be manual or CVT
semi-automatic

OPERATION OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND
MANUAL TRANSAXLE

 Looking up the word "transmission" in any number of places yields

comparable but different descriptions when it comes to automotive
applications, to be more precise. Theoretically, what some reputable
sources refer to as "an enclosed unit of gears that transmits power
from the engine to the driving wheels of a motor vehicle" is also
what a transaxle does. Some definitions go into further detail,
describing an enclosed device that transfers power from the engine's
crankshaft to the drive shaft that connects to the wheels of a
vehicle.
OPERATION OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND
MANUAL TRANSAXLE

 Transaxle has no single driveshaft exiting a transaxle, because there

is no separate differential unit located elsewhere to receive it.
Instead, shafts for both the left- and right-side drive axles
themselves are directly connected to each side of the transaxle.
While they may be separated, transmission cogs and differential
gears are contained within one large transaxle housing.

COMPONENTS OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND
TRANSAXLE

 Parts In A Manual Transmission

- The major parts involved in a manual
transmission are engine output shaft (also called
the input shaft), countershaft, output shaft,
synchronises, dog clutches and a clutch. Shafts
have gears in them which determine what torque
and speed are transferred to the wheels.
PARTS OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION
 CLUTCH
- The clutch's role as the link between the engine and the input shaft is to either
provide rotational force or cut it. It contains several components that operate when
the clutch pedal is pressed. By detaching the flywheel from the clutch assembly
when the clutch pedal is pressed, the engine supply to the transmission is shut off.
As a result, the engine can freely rotate the transmission. The following method is
used to conduct this disengage action. The clutch fork, which is directly connected
to the clutch and the clutch is connected to the flywheel, depresses the clutch
pressure plate once the clutch pedal is depressed. This depression breaks the chain
by removing the link between the clutch and flywheel.
PARTS OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION
 CLUTCH PEDAL
- The clutch pedal is used to disconnect the drive from
the engine to the transmission. The pedal converts a
parabolic clutch pedal swing into a linear movement. This
linear movement is transferred to thrust bearing
movement by mechanical linkages, cable, or hydraulic
fluid displacement.

 Synchronizers are used in modern passenger cars to

eliminate the necessity for double-clutching. The
synchronizers induce engagement between the
collar and the gear, allowing for synchronization of
their speeds. You’ll need the synchronizers to prevent
this because the speeds may differ at times.
PARTS OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION
 The gear selector fork has a
body that consists of two
support plates with
corresponding coaxial
through-holes that allow
the fork to slide over a
gearbox stationary rod
while being supported. A
sliding coupling sleeve of
the gearbox can be
operated at its distal ends
by a pair of prongs that are
fastened to the body and
form their respective
actuating sections.
PARTS OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION

 STICK SHIFT
It is the part that you can handle with your
hand. It’s the central console’s vertical stick that
protrudes. It is attached to the gearbox and can
be used to change gears. A car with a manual or
standard transmission is sometimes referred to
as a stick shift. The vehicle’s stick shift allows
drivers to change ratios to accelerate the
vehicle manually. The transmission is connected
to the stick shift and placed in the car’s center.

AND REMOTE GEARSHIFT LINKAGES

 SLIDING-GEAR TYPE
The gears on the main shaft can slide on it thanks to
splines, but they are otherwise in permanent rotational
mesh with the shaft in this outdated style of transmission
or gearbox.

AND REMOTE GEARSHIFT LINKAGES
 CONSTANT MESH GEARBOX
A transmission type known as a continuous mesh gearbox keeps all
forward gear pairs engaged. All gears are constantly in mesh in a gearbox with
a constant mesh. A form of manual transmission known as a constant mesh
gearbox has meshing or fixed gear positions.
