REACH with a Buddy
(Read and Comprehend Habit with a Buddy)
Rationale
• To help, encourage and improve
reading comprehension of every pupil is to
motivate them to read extensively in
English and Filipino. It would be the most
effective and long term means to help
them increase their vocabulary and their
proficiency in language because failure in
reading comprehension can lead to failure
in school and low self confidence.
• According to Neil Gaiman, the
simplest way to make sure that we raise
literate children is to teach them to read
and to show them that reading is a
pleasurable activities.
This reading intervention program aims to overcome reading
problems specifically in reading comprehension. It will use the
the Buddy or Paired Reading Technique entitled “Reach with a
Buddy” that will help children to improve reading skills.

Description Paired Reading combines powerful technique wherein one


fluent reader help the other less fluent reader by reading aloud,

of the providing encouragement and supportive coaching. This


paired or buddy reading is a repeated oral reading strategy

Program which enable two students to read together a passage for a set
of number of times until they familiarize the selection and be
able to coach, support and help together in a shared goal
which is to become a fluent reader with comprehension and
love for reading.
Activities/Process of the
intervention program:

A. Fluent reader with less fluent reader as his or her buddy.


B. Begin reading simultaneously.
C. Back to simultaneous reading if experiencing difficulty.
D. When selection is mastered through repeated reading, time to answer
and ask the details of the selection as to who, what, where and how the selection is all
about.
Conclusion/Recommendation
Therefore, with the continuous implementation of the reading
intervention on reading comprehension - Reach with a Buddy, the reading
comprehension will result to
1. Made concepts and knowledge meaningful with a buddy or partner
2. Helped connect ideas and created sense
3. Developed valuable description of the situations where knowledge is
applied and solutions are found.
Conclusion/
Recommendation
Commitment, cooperation and continuous support
among teachers, pupils and parents are needed to achieve the goal of
the buddy or paired reading technique through this reading
intervention on reading comprehension - REACH with a Buddy.
