James 4:8a
Come near to God and he will
come near to you. Wash your
hands, you sinners, and purify
your hearts, you double-minded.
James 4:8
You adulterous people, don’t
you know that friendship with the
world means enmity against God?
Therefore, anyone who chooses to
be a friend of the world
becomes an enemy of God.
James 4:4
You adulterous people, don’t

world means enmity against God?
Therefore, anyone who chooses to
be a friend of the world
becomes an enemy of God.
James 4:4
Hosea 3:1
“People who are unwilling to let
go of the world and truly follow
Christ, torn between sin and
obedience, reluctant to let go of
the pleasures of the world for the
sake of discipleship. This
description hits close to home in
an age of nominal Christians who
attend church from time to time,
perhaps even regularly, but who
refuse to let God interfere with
their daily lives and goals”
Craig Blomberg
Or do you think Scripture says
without reason that he jealously
longs for the spirit he has caused
to dwell in us?
James 4:5
“God’s jealousy is not the reflex of
weakness or fear. Instead God is
jealous like a powerful and
merciful king who takes a peasant
girl from a life of shame, forgives
her, marries her and gives her not
the chores of a slave but the
privileges of a wife, of a queen. His
jealousy does not rise from fear or
weakness but from a holy
indignation at having his honour
and power and mercy scorned by
the faithlessness of a fickle spouse”
John Piper
Or do you think Scripture says
without reason that he jealously
longs for the spirit he has caused
to dwell in us? But he gives us
more grace. That is why Scripture
says:
James 4:5-6
Now listen, you who say, “Today or
tomorrow we will go to this or that
city, spend a year there, carry on
business and make money.” Why,
you do not even know what will
happen tomorrow. What is your
life? You are a mist that appears for
a little while and then vanishes.
Instead, you ought to say, “If it is
the Lord’s will, we will live and do
this or that.” As it is, you boast in
your arrogant schemes. All such
boasting is evil. If anyone, then,
knows the good they ought to do
and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
James 4:13-17
And I’ll say to myself, “You have
plenty of grain laid up for many
years. Take life easy; eat, drink and
be merry.”
Luke 12:19
