about Pernambuco?

mean?
What about its
history?
Etymology
The origins of the name Pernambuco are debated. There are 3 hypothesis:

1. the name comes from the combining of the Tupi words para'nã, meaning "great river"
or "sea" and buka, meaning "hole". Pernambuco would mean "hole in the sea",
possibly referring to the Canal de Santa Cruz on the Island of Itamaracá.
2. According to others, pernambuco was the name of brazilwood in local indigenous
languages at the time of first contact, as the tree is found widely in the forests of the
future state (also known as PAU-BRASIL).
3. A third hypothesis also derives from a Tupi word, paranãbuku, meaning "long river", a
possible reference to the Capibaribe River, since primitive maps mark such a
"Pernambuco river" north of Cabo de Santo Agostinho, south of Recife.

The state also has some nicknames, such as Lion of the North, Land of Frevo
and Maracatu and Blessed Land.

Pernambuco is the seventh-most
populous state of Brazil. Its capital and
largest city, Recife, is one of the most
important economic and urban hubs in
the country.

The contemporary state inherits its name

from the Captaincy of Pernambuco,
established in 1534. Large numbers of
slaves were brought from Africa during the
colonial era to cultivate sugarcane, and a
significant portion of the state's population
has some amount of African ancestry.
The state has rich cultural traditions
thanks to its varied history and peoples.

Historically a center of sugarcane cultivation

due to the favorable climate, the state has a
modern economy dominated by the services
sector today, though large amounts of
sugarcane are still grown. The coming of
democracy in 1985 has brought the state
progress and challenges but while economic
and health indicators have improved,
inequality remains high.
Have you ever heard about the PERNAMBUCAN REVOLT?
The Pernambuco Revolution
had a separatist character
and defended the republican
system. This revolt was the
only national movement of
that managed to overcome
the conspiratorial phase
and, in fact, spark the
revolution, even taking
power in Pernambuco and
installing a provisional
government.
The Pernambuco Revolution was the result of local dissatisfactions that had
existed for some time and which were increased with the transfer of the
Portuguese Court to Brazil.
The dissatisfaction with the presence of the Portuguese Court in Brazil
was explained by the increase in taxes, carried out to maintain the
luxuries of the Portuguese royal family and to finance the military
campaigns that were being waged in Cisplatina. In addition, D. João VI
had also appointed Portuguese to important public positions, mainly in
the army, harming the local elites.
The Pernambuco Revolution began on
March 6, 1817. After conquest of
Pernambuco, the revolutionaries installed a
Provisional Government that approved a
series of measures that were put into effect:
the Republic was proclaimed in the
Captaincy of Pernambuco, decreed the
freedom of press and creed.
The duration of the Pernambuco Revolution was reasonably short. The
Portuguese reaction was intense, and a fleet was sent with the aim of
blocking the city of Recife. Soldiers were also sent overland from Bahia
with the mission of invading that city. The defeat of the revolutionaries
officially took place on May 20, 1817.

American What similarities can you see?
Revolution
x Do you think one was related to the
Pernambucan Revolt other somehow?
Other important reasons for the revolt
include:
1. The ongoing struggle for the
independence of Spanish colonies all
over in South America;
2. The independence of the United
States;
3. The generally liberal ideas that came
through all of Brazil the century
before;
4. The development of a distinct culture
in Pernambuco.
