What Is a Main Verb?
• A verb is a word that tells what the subject does or is

• In the sentence The monkey climbs the tree.


The subject is The monkey. Climbs
The predicate is climbs the tree.
The verb is climbs.
What Is a Main or Action Verb?

Verbs are action
words.

someone or subject
is doing.
Sometimes the different forms of ‘to have’ can
act as auxiliary verbs.
Auxiliary verbs are ‘helping verbs’ that appear with another main verb in a
sentence.

‘fallen’ is the main verb

For example:
Humpty Dumpty has fallen off the wall.

‘has’ is used as an auxiliary verb


Sometimes the different forms of ‘to be’ can act
as auxiliary verbs
