SMOOTH WHEEL ROLLER

1.STATIC SMOOTH WHEELED ROLLERS

• The smooth wheeled rollers consist of one large in frontand

two steel drum on the rear
• The gross weight of these rollers is in the range of 8-10
tonnes
• Suitable for well graded sand ,gravel ,crushed rocks
• They are used for compacting highway base courses
• The speed of rolling is in the range 1.5-6.0 kmph
• Generally 6-12 passes are needed
• The ground coverage provided by smoot wheel roller is 100 percent
• The weight of roller can be increased by filling the inside space of the drum with water or wet sand. This is
called balasting
• Performance of smooth wheel roller depends upon it load per cm width and diameter of the roll
• When the moisture content is little more than optimum it will compact more easily
• Diesel rollers are cheaper in running cost
• Scrappers are provided on the wheels in adjustable position covering the full width of the roll, with water
sprinkling arrangements for scrapping the mud and keeping the wheel clean during rolling
• Maximum grade a road roller can climb in 1 in 5
STEAM ROLLER

• A steam roller is a form of road roller –a type of

heavy construction used for levelling surfaces such
as roads or airfield that is powerd by steam engine
• In Britain a 30 ton steam roller was design in 863 by
william clark
• The steam road roller can stand heavier wear and
tear and is much simpler to work than the diesel
roller but it takes over an hour to start up
• Steam roller are now getting outdated

 2. VIBRATING SMOOTH WHEELED ROLLERS

• It comes in two models single or dual drum models

• The drums are made to vibrate by employing rotating
forces 1]pressure,2]impact,3]viberation
• Vibrating roller is cmpactor having a drum used to densify
soil,asphalt or other materials through the application of
combined static and dynamic forces to increase the load
bearing capacity of the surface
• This type of roller having a wheels of 0.9-1.5m in diameter
and 1.2-1.8m wide
• Self propelled vibratory rollers are now available weighing
from 4-6tonnes
• Vibrations are generated by the rotation of an eccentric shaft
inside
• A vibratory roller is used for compacting granular base
courses. It is sometimes used for asphaltic concrete work
TANDEM ROLLER

• This type of roller consists of a large steel drum in front and one drum on rear end
• The ground pressure exercise by tandem roller is about 10-17 kg/cm2
• The weight of tandem roller varies from 2-8 tonnes and that of two wheel roller varies
from 8-10 tonnes
