ASPECT OF THE VERBS

Aspect of the Verb
 The aspect of a verb tells us whether
the verb's action is ongoing or completed.
 The aspect of a verb refers to how the
action relates to time. Some actions
happen just once, others are repeated,
and still others extend over a longer
period of time. 
TYPES OF ASPECTS ARE:

SIMPLEASPECT
PROGRESSIVE ASPECT
PERFECT ASPECT
PERFECT PROGRESSIVE ASPECT
SIMPLE ASPECT of a Verb

 The simple aspect (or indefinite aspect as it's


occasionally called) is the verb form used to express a
fact.
There are three simple aspect tenses:
1. Simple Past tense ( Ex. The dog ate bones. )
2. Simple Present Tense ( Ex. The dog eats bones.)
3. Simple Future Tense(Ex. The dog will eat
bones.)
PROGRESSIVE ASPECT of a Verb

 The progressive aspect (or continuing aspect as it's sometimes called)


is the aspect of a verb that expresses an ongoing action.

There are three progressive aspect tenses:


1. Progressive Past tense ( Ex. The snake was eating chicken.
)
2. Progressive Present Tense ( Ex. The man is watching TV.)
3. Future Progressive Tense(Ex. They will be going to the
park.)
PERFECT ASPECT of a Verb

 The perfect aspect (or complete aspect as it's sometimes called) is


the aspect of a verb that expresses a completed action.

There are three perfect aspect tenses:


1. Perfect Past tense ( Ex. I had finished my homework before mom
called me for dinner. )
2. Perfect Present Tense ( Ex. I have put the money in the machine.)
3. Future Perfect Tense(Ex. By the time the show is over, Marie will
have danced for 40 minutes.
PERFECT PROGRESSIVE ASPECT
of a Verb
 The perfect progressive tense (also called the perfect
continuous tense) is used to say that an event or action is, was, or will
be continually occurring (progressive) but that it is, was, or will be
completed at a later time, or that it relates to a later time (perfect).
There are three perfect progressive aspect tenses:
 Past Perfect Progressive ( Ex. They had been cooking for only an hour
before their guests arrived.)
 Present Perfect Progressive ( Ex. She has been living in that house for
only a year. )
 Future Perfect Progressive (Ex. When my guests finally arrive I will
have been preparing for the party for 8 hours.)
