time.
April 23, 1564: William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-on-
Avon to John and Mary Shakespeare. He was the 3 rd of 8
children.
Much of Shakespeare’s younger years
remain a mystery, but there are rumors
about what jobs he may have worked.

Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway.

At the time of their marriage,


William was eighteen and Anne
was twenty-six.
William and Anne have three
children together (Susanna,
Hamnet, and Judith). Shakespeare left his family in 1591 to
pursue writing in London.

and playwright.

As theatres were beginning to


grow in popularity, it is probable
that Shakespeare began earning a
living writing plays (adapting
old ones and working with others
on new ones).
In 1598, Shakespeare, in collaboration with
other actors, designed and built The Globe.

This circular theatre was the first of its


kind, breaking away from the
traditional rectangular theatres.

 Three stories high – upper levels were for
the wealthy
 Elaborate costumes but no props
 No artificial light
 Young boys played the part of women;
women weren’t allowed to be actors
1612: Shakespeare moved back to
Stratford where he retired both rich and
famous.
1616: William Shakespeare died on his birthday.
At the time of his death, Shakespeare is said to have written around
37 plays and 154 sonnets. He is also known to have contributed
over two thousand words to the English language.

DRAMA TERMINOLOGY
 Play: A literary piece consisting of dialogues
between various characters, epilogue, monologue,
prologue and an end. It refers to composition.
 Monologue: When one person is talking, for a long
time (Mercutio’s Queen Mab Speech – Act 1 Scene 4)

 Dialogue: the words that the characters speak


 Stage Directions: Are the instructions and other
information for staging the play; Usually in parentheses
( ) or brackets [ ] and written in italics

 Prologue: Introduction to a play in which one


character sums up & foreshadows future events

 Prose: regular paragraph format with no


rhyme or rhythm
 Poetry: uses rhythmic qualities of
language
 Tragedy: A narrative about serious and important
actions that end unhappily, usually with the death of
the main characters.

 Scene: Is like a division of an act, in which a certain


portion of the play unfolds, usually separated by
location

 Playwright: Is the author of the play


 Script: Is a written version of a play or movie, if you’re
auditioning for a movie, you’ll get the script to practice a
scene or two

It was written in 1595.
 Shakespeare’s most famous play and
considered greatest love story ever told
The play has a highly moral tone:
disobedience, as well as fate, leads to the

Romeo and Juliet to get married.

ACT 3
 On their wedding night, Tybalt kills Mercutio.
 Romeo revenges for Mercutio and kills Tybalt.
 Juliet got very frustrated about Romeo killing her cousin.
 The Prince exiles Romeo from Verona. Romeo fled to
Mantua.
 Lord Capulet insists that Juliet be married to Paris as
soon as possible.
 Juliet to ask the Friar for remedy to prevent the wedding
with Paris.
ACT 4
 Friar Lawrence proposes a plan: Juliet must consent to
marry Paris; then on the night before the wedding, she
will drink a sleeping potion that will make her appear
she is dead.
 The friar will send word to Romeo, thru Friar John, in
Mantua to help him retrieve her when she wakes up.
 The Nurse found out the alleged-dead body of Juliet.
ACT 5
 Balthasar arrives from Verona with the news of Juliet’s apparent
suicide. Romeo rushes to Verona to see Juliet’s body.
 Romeo buys some posion from a poor Apothecary.
 Friar John apologizes to Friar Lawrence for failing to send the
word of original plan to Romeo.
 Paris guards Juliet’s tomb. Romeo killed Paris.
 Romeo drinks Apothecary’s poison thinking his Juliet was dead.
Juliet woke up and stabs herself with what she called “happy
dagger”
 The Capulets and Montague decided to end their feud.
