Rule 1
For words that end in a silent -e, drop the -e
and add -ing

• Come – coming
• Revise- revising
• Bubble- bubbling
• Trouble – troubling
Example-The children were bubbling with
excitement because their friends were coming
over to spend time revising some troubling
words

Rule 2
For one-syllable words that end in consonant-
vowel-consonant (except x and w), double the
last letter and add -ing.

• Run- running
• Stop- stopping
• Sit- sitting
Example-We were sitting near the
tree when we say the prefects
stopping the students who were
running.

Rule 3
For most other words (including words that
end in -y), add -ing with no changes.

• Rain- raining
• Send-sending
• Worry- worrying
Example- There’s no hurry
sending the umbrella. I’m not
worrying about it raining
