Sleep Investigation
Stage 2 Psychology
Instructions to participants….
• Students are not to talk at all during the cognitive test data collection.

• You will shortly receive a handout containing the following cognitive tests:
• 1 x snowflakes test
• 6 x mazes tests

• Each of these cognitive tasks will be timed as follows:


• Snowflakes test – 1 minute
• 6 mazes – 3 minutes

• If you finish the task/s before the time is up, close your booklet, face down and wait
quietly.
Instructions to participants….

• Once completed, you will hand up the following to me:


• Cognitive tasks
• Sleep log
• Epworth sleepiness score sheets

• This data will then be collated into a spread sheet containing


quantitative data.
Snowflakes Task

Snowflakes Task
• Strike out as many of the pictured snowflakes as you can in the
one minute time period.
• For each wrong symbol = one point taken from total score.
• Maximum score achievable = 25

• Time limit = one minute


Mazes Tasks

Mazes Task
• Complete as many maze puzzles as you can within
the time limit.
• ‘Blind alleys’ will also be measured as part of the
final data.
• Time limit = 3 minutes
Focus Groups

• You will now be randomly allocated into one of two groups.


• Each group needs to assign a scribe and a facilitator. The scribe types all the
responses from the group members and the facilitator makes sure each person
contributes to the discussion.
• Groups will respond to and answer 3 questions relating to sleep. You should be
aiming for at least one page of responses per question.
• I will be checking in on each group throughout the time allocation. Any
questions or issues, come and see me.

• Total time allocation: 45 minutes


Focus Groups

• Once finished, I will collect the focus group data


sheets and type them up.

• This data will then be collated into a word


document containing qualitative data.
Debriefing

• Thank you very much for your participation in this Sleep study 

• If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email or come see
me.

• The data will be made available to you a.s.a.p. with full confidentiality
guidelines adhered to.

• Make sure you follow the same procedure as today with your
recruits! (excluding the focus groups).
