What is Secularization?

refers to the historical process by which religion

loses its significance in society and culture. The

role of religion in contemporary communities is

constrained as a result of secularization.

SECULARIZATION IN PHILIPPINES

The suspects were the leaders of the Filipino secular,

who fought for the secularization of the Philippine

Catholic Church. The king of Spain and the pope gave

orders for the secularization of the country's parishes,

but the order of friars fought against this, saying that

the Filipino secular were not ready to take over.

When did Secularization begin?

As early as the 16th century, both the King of Spain and

the Pope wanted to give the country's parishes to the

secular priests. At the start of the Spanish colonization,

the parishes were set up and run by regular priests from

different religious orders. These were the Augustinians,

Recollects, Jesuits, Franciscans, and Dominicans.

During the time that Spain was in charge, the seculars asked that the royal

and papal orders be carried out. This was done for a while, but it wasn't

good enough and the people weren't ready to lead the parishes.
When did Secularization movement began in the Philippines?

In the 1770s, a movement began to separate church and state. After the
Jesuits were kicked out of all of the Spanish empire's colonies,
including the Philippines, in 1768, the Spanish monarchy issued a royal
decree in 1774 saying that seculars could take the places of priests in
parishes. Governor General put the order into place in the Philippines.
In the Philippines, this meant that local
priests filled the empty positions, which
the Spanish regular clergymen didn't like
for many reasons. Most native secular
priests also turned out to be bad at
running parishes. The seculars of parishes
in Pampanga were taken over from the
Augustinians by Governor General Anda.
Reasons why Rizal was chosen and declared as the Philippine's National Hero.

1. He was the first Filipino to unite and awaken the Filipino People to
peacefully rise for independence. •

2. He is a model for beiiig a peacemaker by his complete self-denial, his

complete abandonment of his personal interest and to think only of his
country and people. •

3. He was a towering figure in the propaganda campaign from 1882-1896. –

4. He was a martyr at Bagumbayan where he willingly died for our country. •

REGULAR PRIEST

• The difference between a regular priest and a secular

priest can be summarized as follows: regular priests
are members of a particular religious order, whereas
secular priests are not associated with any particular
religious group.
Regular Clergy (Regulars)

Traditionally, priests who have made serious vows and are required to

live in a religious community while adhering to a code of life. The

origin of the word "regular" can be traced back to the Latin word "rule."

These priests can be differentiated from secular priests, who do not

reside in a religious community, thanks to their communal lifestyle.

Who were called regular priests?

In the Roman Catholic Church, the term "regular clergy" or

"regulars" refers to clerics who live by a "rule" and are part of
religious institutes. In the past, it meant people who were part
of Catholic religious orders, which were groups where at least
some of the members made a solemn vow.

POLITICAL SYSTEM
The Governor General, appointed by the Spanish King headed the central administration.
He was the king's representative in the governmental matters and was the Vice-Royal
Patron over religious matters. He exercised extensive powers as the head of the state and
the church.

Next to the Central government was the provincial government or alcaldias run by civil
governors, the city government called "cabildo or ayuntamiento" administered by a
mayor and a vice mayor who were both chief executives and chief judicial magistrate. It
should be noted that the above positions are occupied by the Spaniards.
SECULAR
• security, also called the secular or secularness
(from the Latin word saeculum, which means
"worldly" or "of a generation"), is the state of
having nothing to do with religion or being neutral
about it.

• meaning a way of thinking, doing things, or other

things that have nothing to do with religion or
spirituality.

• Clergy don't have to live in a monastic or other order

or belong to it as a religious rule.

❖When it came to priests, the word "secular" meant that they

lived in a different place, not that they didn't believe in
God.

❖In Christianity, deacons and priests who are not monks or

members of a religious order are called "secular priests" or
"clergy."

are known as
"GOMBURZA," which is a
portmanteau of their names .
❖The three GOMBURZA priests were
Spanish mestizos who were not
members of any other religious order.
They served the GOMBURZA as
independent priests. A decree issued by
the monarchy in 1774 specified that
secular priests were to be placed in
charge of parishes. The religious orders
were angered by this development since
it made it more difficult for them to
exert their authority over the Spanish
colony.
W hen did the conflict of the secular and
regular clergy/priests began?
❖The Discussion About Whether or Not Society Should Be Secularized
It was the insistence of the bishops to visit the parishes that were being
led by ordinary priests that served as the spark that ignited the issue in
the first place. They said that it was their duty to look into the ways in
which these parishes were being administered as organizations, and
they did so in good faith.
• Soon after that, the controversy of them
having conflicts between the two clergy
became more intense when the Jesuits, a
