OCULUS RIFT:
A BRIEF HISTORY
■ Palmer Luckey, the founder of the Oculus VR, fell in
love with the concept of virtual reality when he was 15.

■ He created his first VR headset in his parent’s garage

when he was 16.

■ Luckey met John Carmack online, who was also

dabbling in the virtual reality business.
■ Carmack demonstrated Luckey’s prototype at E3
(Electronic Entertainment Expo), which spread on the
internet.

■ Luckey started a Kickstarter campaign to fund his

Oculus Rift project with an initial goal of a modest
$250,000.

■ The first developer version, DK1, awed many

developers but it was far from perfect. The second
developer version, DK2, was made with DK1’S flaws
in mind.
