WORKING PRINCIPLES OF DUAL FUEL
ENGINE
Dual-fuel engine is the diesel
engine that can run on both
gaseous and liquid fuels.
DUAL FUEL
DF engine was introduced by Wärtsilä in 1995. This
resulted in the ability to combine fuel flexibility and
efficiency with environmental performance

The first dual-fuel (DF) engines for marine

application started operating in 2003. They are
installed in the world’s first gas-driven PSV VIKING
ENERGY and STRIL PIONER.
How Does Dual Fuel Work?
The air-to-natural gas mixture is then drawn into
the cylinder, just as it would be in a spark-ignited
engine, but with a leaner air-to-fuel ratio. Near
the end of the compression stroke, diesel fuel is
injected and ignites, causing the natural gas to
burn.
A dual fuel engine can operate on 100 percent
diesel fuel or the substitution mixture of diesel
and natural gas, delivering the same power
density, torque curve and transient response as
the base diesel engine.
Benefits of Dual Fuel Engines

In the oil and gas market, fuel is one of the

largest contributors to total cost of operation.
Cummins Dual Fuel engines allow for impressive
reductions in these costs.
DUAL FUEL OPERATION
Mixes natural gas with intake air
Diesel provides ignition – no spark plug
Diesel start-up power density and transient
performance
Gas replaces diesel with 50/70 percent
substitution rate
