CASE STUDY

According to Creswell (2014), case studies are a strategy research to hide

carefully something by collection complete information using various data
collection procedures. In addition, case studies were also carried out to gain a
deeper understanding in-depth and more intensive analysis of something
against individual, group, or situation.

WHEN TO DO A CASE STUDY

 case studies are often a good choice in a thesis or dissertation. they keep your project
focused and manageable when you don’t have the time or resources to do large-scale
research.

 you might use just one complex case study where you explore a single subject in depth,
or conduct multiple case studies to compare and illuminate different aspects of your
research problem.

FLOWERDEW AND PEACOCK (2001A) IDENTIFY A NUMBER OF READING

SKILLS THAT RESEARCH HAS SHOWN TO BE IMPORTANT FOR EAP
LEARNERS INCLUDING:

• Using existing knowledge to help understand new information.

• Recognizing text structures.
• Skimming for gist.
• Scanning to locate specific pieces of information.
• Distinguishing more from less important information.
• Reading selectively according to the purpose for reading.
• Distinguishing facts from opinions.
• Distinguishing main ideas from evidence.

TYPES OF CASE STUDY RESEARCH

Explanatory Case Study
• Explanatory case study is suitable for research with casual case study
types.
• The aims of this study is to describe or explain a relationship between
two or more variables.
• The research questions used are "why" and "how" of the event.
• This case study focuses on real-life phenomena.
• The examples: politics, economics, etc.

Exploratory Case Study

 This case study is to explore the situation that have no clear understanding of a
phenomenon.
 The aim is to help researcher get more background information about a case.
 The researcher uses two data sources: exploratory data and additional data.
 An example is about the population census.

8
Descriptive Case Study

 A descriptive case study is a study that describes a case and

requires the researcher to start the research with descriptive
theory, which clearly describes the results of the research.
 The purpose of this method is to compare new theories or
discoveries with existing theories and discoveries in the same
field.
 This topic of study covers the field of culture, also known as the
field of history.
 Examples are about history, culture, etc.
ELT Research Method 9

Multiple/Collective Case Study

• Multiple case studies are case study research that uses

multiple issues or cases in one study.

• The aim is to obtain more detailed data, so that the

description of the research results becomes clearer
and more detailed.
ELT Research Method 10

Intrinsic Case Study

 Intrinsic case studies are those that study a case in

depth and contain interesting things to learn that come
from the case itself.
 Intrinsic study is more common in psychology, health,
and social work.
 The focus of intrinsic studies is on unique individuals.
 The goal of the study is not only to understand the
subject better, but also their history and how they interact
with everything around them.
 For example: case studies in medicine may focus on an
individual patient or ailment.
ELT Research Method 11

Instrumental Case Study

 Instrumental case studies use A case to gain insight into

A phenomenon.
 The case is positioned as an instrument.
 For example, a researcher interested in childhood
obesity rates may conduct a study with high school
students and a sports program.
