General Statement
● It presents the topic of a paragraph, essay, or book
and makes a statement about it, usually a claim that
needs to be proven.
Supporting
Statement
● A sentence with information that supports a main
idea or claim.
● Supporting statements are usually found in the
middle of a paragraph, after the topic sentence,
and before a concluding sentence.

Types of supporting statements:
1. Providing useful details - It is used when the author wants to
expound a main idea in a more detailed manner.

2. Presenting facts or evidence – This is used when the author


provides verifiable facts to support his/her claim.

3. Providing examples – It is used when the author gives


examples of the statement, so that the reader can see what the
writer is trying to express.
EXAMPLE
Mother gorillas do a lot for their babies. They nurse their babies.
They protect them from danger. And they teach the tiny gorillas
how to get along with other gorillas.
