STATEMENT
A thesis statement is the controlling idea
that you will develop in your paper. This
can be found usually at the end of an
introduction. A thesis statement can be
one sentence. However, if necessary, it
can also be two or three sentences.
WHY DO WE HAVE
TO WRITE A THESIS
STATEMENT?
We must write thesis statement:
● to test your ideas by narrowing them into a
sentence or two
● to better organize and develop argument
● to provide the reader with “guide” to the
argument
CHARACTERISTICS
OF A GOOD THESIS
STATEMENT:
Specific
Takes a stand on the prompt
Unified and express one main
idea
Does not simply state fact but
sets the stage for analysis of a
topic
