What is Energy?
Energy is the ability to do work.
Living things need energy for the processes that keep them alive.
Non-living systems also need energy to function.
◦ For example, cars and aeroplanes need fuel to provide them with energy to
move.
What is Work Done?
For work to be done:
◦ There is a force acting on the object.
◦ The object moves.
◦ The movement of the object is in the direction of the force.
Force = 1 N Force = 1 N
Distance = 1 m

Weight = 1 N Weight = 1 N
Calculating work done
The force that you exert in lifting an object to a certain height above the
ground is equal to the force of gravity acting downwards on the object.
The force exerted by gravity on the object’s mass is known as the weight of
the object.
The weight of a 1 kg mass is usually taken to be 10 N.
Work done to lift an object = Lifting force distance
= Weight distance
Forms of Energy
Potential Energy
◦ Potential energy is stored energy due to a body’s position or condition.
Kinetic Energy
◦ Kinetic energy is the energy that a body has due to its motion.
◦ All moving objects have kinetic energy.
◦ Examples: a bird flying in the sky, a girl walking down the street and a car speeding down the
road.
