Natural Hazards-Cyclones

STRATEGIES TO MANAGE THE IMPACTS OF CYCLONES

OBJECTIVES

 To describe and evaluate the strategies for managing the impacts of natural hazards
before, during and after an event.

 Students are asked to write and come up with the strategies to reduce the impacts of the
cyclones.
Strategies to manage the impacts of Natural
hazards
1. Management strategies focus on predictions, preventions and protections
2. In other words – trying to deal with natural hazards before, during and after the event .
3. The strategies used can be short term strategies (such as warnings by text messaging , television or radio,
rescuing people , providing food , water supplies and temporary shelter)
4. Long term (such as training emergency services, providing education and awareness so people can stock pile
essential items or evacuate safely) .
5. Strategies should be sustainable.
6. Improvement in technology will help to predict and protect against natural hazards. (expensive)
7. For rebuilding process- national and international funding is required.
8. International Aid- from other governments and charitable organizations. They offer assistance as medicine,
shelter and food.
Strategies to reduce tropical cyclone-

A) Reducing the risk of tropical cyclones beforehand:-

 Tropical cyclones are the most predictable of natural hazards .
 Their formation and movement can be tracked using Satellites.
 Warnings can be given hours before or days before.
 Evacuation plans , emergency training drills can be carried out to prepare disaster response.
 Building designs- for more resistance to strong winds and they can be raised from the ground to protect
against storm surges. Preserve mangrove swamps to absorb the energies of storm surges.
 Food supplies and cyclone shelters can be provided , along with the warning systems. can be stored on
higher ground
 Education is the key to reduce risk, as people will be better prepared.
Strategies …..

B) Reducing the cyclone risk during the event:-

Once the high winds and storm surges hit the place- people need to stay inside the cyclone
shelters and wait for the storm to pass.

C)Reducing tropical cyclone risk after the event.

Once the storm has passed – major damage is usually done to the buildings, and water and power
infrastructure.
People caught in the affected areas should be provided with food , water and shelter.
Victims might be trapped in debris- hence rescue operations should be carried out immediately.
International aid for immediate assistance
Social networking for reuniting the families.
