CARGO MEASURING

SYSTEMS
OIL TANKERS
THREE TYPES OF MEASURING SYSTEMS

OPEN SYSTEM

CLOSED SYSTEM

RESTRICTED SYSTEM
OPEN MEASURING SYSTEM
 Whenever a vessel's measurement hatch is
opened to the atmosphere to perform the
necessary measurement tasks.

OPENED TO ATMOSPHERE
CLOSED MEASURING SYSTEM
A closed measurement system is designed
to allow cargo measurements to be taken
with no vapors escaping to the atmosphere.

NO VAPORS ESCAPING TO ATMOSPHERE

RESTRICTED MEASURING SYTEMS

A restricted measurement system is

designed to allow measurements to be taken
with minimum vapors being allowed into
the atmosphere.

MINIMUM VAPORS RELEASED

CATEGORIES OF EQUIPMENTS
The two basic categories of closed or restricted system
measurement equipment used on marine tank vessels
are :

FIXED INSTALLED -AUTOMATIC SYSTEM

( sensor installed in each cargo tank – controlling ,
measuring & monitor unit in CCR)

PORTABLE - MANUAL SYSTEM

( to be carried from tank to tank and manually measured)
WHAT ALL MEASUREMENTS POSSIBLE ?

FIXED AUTOMATIC SYSTEMS are primarily used

to obtain

Levels of Cargo Liquid ( Not Free Water)

Temperature of Cargo Liquid

.
WHAT ALL MEASUREMENTS
POSSIBLE ?
MANUAL PORTABLE EQUIPMENT can be
used to obtain
Level of liquid cargo
Level of free water
Cargo temperatures
Taking Cargo samples
PORTABLE MEASURING DEVICES

Portable Measurement Unit (PMU)

(eg. UTI ) obtain the appropriate
measurements through a Vapor
Control Valve (VCV) located at each
tank.
