Air Pollution

PRESENTED BY ASAD ALI

Introduction

 Air pollution occurs when harmful or excessive quantities of substances are

introduced into Earth's atmosphere.
 It also refers to the release of pollutants into the air that are detrimental to human
health and the planet as a whole.
 Air pollutants are of two types: ‘Primary air pollutants’ and ‘Secondary air
pollutants’.
Types:

 Primary air pollutants: Oxides of Sulphur, Oxides of Nitrogen, Oxides of

Carbon, Particulate Matter, Methane, Ammonia, Chlorofluorocarbons, Toxic
metals etc.

 Secondary air pollutants:ground level ozone, smog and POPs (Persistent

Organic Pollutants). Acid rain
Causes and sources:

 Burning of Fossil Fuels: release Sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide

 Automobiles:
 Agricultural Activities: Ammonia, harmful chemicals
 Factories and Industries:carbon monoxide, organic compounds, hydrocarbons,
and chemicals
 Mining Activities:. The dust and chemicals
 Domestic Sources: The household cleaning products and paints
Effects:

 Diseases:
 Global Warming:
 Acid Rain: nitrogen oxides and sulphur oxides+water
 Ozone Layer Depletion: chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halons, and
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons
 Effect on Animals:
Control:

 Avoid Using Vehicles:

 Energy Conservation:
 Use of Energy efficient appliances:
 Shifting industries
 Using Modern Techniques: Air filters, scrubbers, precipitators etc
 Shifting to Natural Gases:
Breathe healthy and be healthy.
