 Basic Tool: The Camera

“KNOW THY CAMERA” Different cameras have different parts. Know

them by heart and how they function.

“Treat your camera as you would treat a lover.”

With proper care your camera will last a lifetime.
Make sure it is held properly and upright and sling it
so it won’t slip.

“Get used to taking pictures.” Click and push away. You have to be
comfortable using it. Besides, you can always delete pics you don’t like.

 Functions
• Zoom ring – facilitates zooming
• Focus ring – facilitates focusing
• Distance Scale - facilitates
measurement of the view/subjects’
distance
• Neck strap lug- where the strap is
mounted
• Mode Dial- used to change the
cam’s mode.
• Flash Hot Shoe - for housing a
flash unit
• Control buttons
• Shutter release – the button which
opens the shutter
• Main Command Dial - used to
navigate menus, aperture
selection and photos
• LCD Control Panel – used for
adjusting basic camera settings on
the top side or main monitor

SCENE MODES
 Functions
• Viewfinder eyepiece – allows the user
to view the image to be photographed
• Playback - this is where photos are
reviewed (still). Where images are
played or stopped (video)
• Menu – lets you access the cam’s
main menu for adjustments, options
and settings
• Zoom out /Thumbnail/
reduces photos while viewing in
playback mode
• Zoom in – enlarges photos while
viewing in playback mode
• Info – shows info of selected photo
• AF/AE lock button – locks both cam
exposure and lens focus
• Movie record button – starts and stops
video recording
• Multi selector – used for adjusting basic
cam settings and selecting photos for
review
• OK button – confirms selected command

• Speaker – facilitates audio recording for
video shoot
• Delete button – deletes selected
image/video
• Monitor – used for viewing photos and
camera settings, options and menu.
How a Camera Works
 How a Camera Works
• A picture is taken and the camera automatically
converts the pixels (picture elements)from analog
to digital format.
• The camera then converts the digital pixels to
color images.
• Then they are stored in digital memory within the
camera and/or on memory cards/sticks and so on.
• Pictures can then be subsequently transferred
from the digital camera either by serial cables or
more recently via a USB port or memory card
drive.
