Session 1: OBJECTIVES
WHAT? WHY?
1. Identify the aspects in the K-12
Mathematics Curriculum that connect to the
conduct of Mathematical Investigations(MI)
2. Identify the learning Theories that strongly
Learning
support the use of MI in the K-12 curriculum Theories
3. Appreciate the essence of MI in the K-12
Curriculum
4. Integrate the identified theories in the
development of learning activities in
Mathematics

The Curriculum
a. shall be learner-centered, inclusive and
developmentally appropriate;
b. shall be relevant, responsive and research-based;
c. shall be culture-sensitive;
d. shall be contextualized and global;
e. shall use pedagogical approaches that are
constructivist, inquiry-based, reflective,
collaborative and integrative;

Constructivism

Constructivism
*people Construct meaning through their interpretive interactions
and experiences in their social environment.

*Prior knowledge and experiences play a significant role in learning

and forms the basis of subsequent learning.

* Focuses on the WHY of learning and opens the door to critical

thinking and intellectual development
* Empowerment of the learner, i.e active construction of knowledge
and not passive reception of information.
* Cooperative learning: Teacher as facilitator, instigator, coach and
assessor (Caffarella & Bannet, 1994)
Constructivism and Connectivism informs
school mathematics to embrace …
Constructivism
• Mascolo & Fischer ( 2005), “Constructivism
is a learning theory which holds that
knowledge is best gained through a process
of reflection and active construction in the
mind” (as quoted in Brau, 2018).

• Constructivism states that “Knowledge is

constructed, rather than innate, or passively
absorbed” (Mcleod, 2019).
Constructivism
• Knowledge (K) exists in connected
networks (framework or schema)
• Learning occurs via 2 processes
Jean Piaget
• assimilation: K is added, without
changing the framework
• accommodation: K is added, changing
the framework
Assimilation VS Accomodation

The boy saw an airplane and With the help of new schema,
from the existing schema, he Mother told him that it is not a now he learns how to recognize
called it a “ bird”. This is called bird , it is an airplane and people correctly the difference of a bird

MI is Even More
than
Constructivism….
“A Mathematics Curriculum that
Emphasizes Computations and Rules is
like a Literature Curriculum that
emphasizes grammar and spelling.”
