prayer

Lord Jesus, you who willed to become poor, give us

eyes and a heart directed toward the poor; help us to
recognize you in them-in their thirst, their hunger,
their loneliness, and their misfortune.
Enkindle within our Vicentian Family unity,
simplicity, humility, and the fire love that burned in
St. Vincent de Paul.

Strengthen us, so that, faithful to the practice of

these virtues, we may contemplate you and serve
you in the person of the poor, and may one day be
united with you and them in your Kingdom.

lupang hinirang
Bayang magiliw,
Perlas ng silanganan,
Alab ng puso
Sa dibdib mo’y buhay.
Lupang hinirang,
Duyan ka ng magiting,
Sa manlulupig
Di ka pasisiil.
Sa dagat at bundok,
Sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw,
May dilag ang tula
At awit sa paglayang minamahal.
Ang kislap ng watawat mo’y
Tagumpay na nagniningning;
Ang bituin at araw niya,
Kailan pa ma’y di magdidilim.
Lupa ng araw, ng luwalhati’t pagsinta,
Buhay ay langit sa piling mo;
Aming ligaya na ‘pag may mang-aapi,
Ang mamatay nang dahil sa ‘yo.

Saint vincent de paul

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Feast day - September 27 Vincent de Paul was a priest, founder
of the Congregation of the Mission and the Company of Daughters of Charity. On May 12,
1885 Pope leo XIII proclaimed him UNIVERSAL PATRON SAINT OF ALL WORKS OF
CHARITY.
He was born of a poor peasant family in the village of Pouy in Gascony, France, on April
24, 1581.
Vincent was holly a man of God ready to give himself to the point of heroism in order to
attend to the spiritual and bodily needs he saw on every side. "I belong to God and to the
poor," he said, "In the midst of the most distracting occupations, his soul was always
intimately united with God and the poor. He died in Paris, September 27, 1660, was
beatified August 13, 1737 and was canonized June 16, 1739.

ST. LOUISE DE MARILLAC

Feast Day - May 9 Louise de Marillac, co-founder of the Company of Daughters of Charity,
was proclaimed on February 10, 1960 by Pope John XXII PATRONESS OF ALL THOSE
WHO DEVOTE THEMSELVES TO CHRISTIAN SOCIAL WORKS.

Louise was born August 12, 1591. In 1613 she married Antoine Le Gras who died thirteen
years later, leaving her with a son. She took a vow of widowhood and chose St. Vincent de
Paul as her spiritual director. Under his guidance she was very active in caring for the poor
and visiting the Confraternities of Charity. In collaboration with him, she eventually founded
the Little Company of the Daughters of Charity.

On her deathbed on March 15, 1660 Louise said to her Sisters, "I continue to ask God to
bless you and I beg Him to grant you the grace of perseverance in your vocation, to serve
Him in the manner He demands of you. Take great care of the poor .... " Louise was
canonized March 11, 1934.

Bl. Therese-Madeleine Fantou

Therese-Madeleine Fantou was a religious with the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent
de Paul martyred during the French Revolution. She is recognized as a Blessed martyr by
the Catholic Church.
Coming from a very modest family, she received from her mother a rigorous Catholic
education.

At the age of 24, on November 28, 1771, she joined the Daughters of Charity of Saint
Vincent de Paul de Plouer and entered the mother house in Paris.
The sisters of Arras would not escape judgment. Arrested and transferred from prison to
prison, Thérèse Fantou and the nuns of the congregation refused to accept the constitution.
On June 26, 1794 they were beheaded.

With her companions Madeleine Fontaine, Françoise Lanel and Jeanne Gérard, she was
beatified by Pope Benedict XV on June 13, 1920. The four Blessed are honored on June 26.

Daughters of Charity Marie Madeleine Fontaine,
Marie Françoise Lanel, Thérèse Madeleine Fantou
and Jeanne Gerard, are referred to as the martyred
Daughters of Charity of Arras, as they were
stationed in Arras at the time of their arrest. At the
outbreak of the Revolution in 1789 they had a
dispensary and a free school for girls, and they
made home visits to the poor.

Any members of religious communities who

refused to take various oaths were regarded as
offending against one of the main aims of the
French Revolution, namely the bringing of the
Church under state control. The four Sisters
refused the oath and remained faithful to the
Church. They were guillotined on June 26, 1794
(their memorial is this Friday). They were beatified
in June 1920.
