TYPES OF SEXUALITY
 What is Sex and Gender?
Sex refers to our physical realities and usually
categorized as female or male, our anatomy or
physical characteristics. Gender refers to the
socially constructed roles, behaviors,
expressions and identities of girls, women,
boys, men, and gender diverse people.

Primary Characteristics
• Male primary somatic sexual characteristics
are the penis and the scrotum, all of which
allow a male to make and deliver sperm.
• Female primary sexual characteristics are the
vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, clitoris,
cervix, and the ability to bear children.

Characteristics
Secondary sexual characters are those
characters that are governed by the hormones
released at the time of puberty and usually
are around two years earlier in females than in
men.
• Male: Hair growth on the face in the form of
a beard and mustache, The growth of his
testicles, Heavier musculature, Adam’s apple
development, The larynx becomes larger
resulting in a deeper voice.
• Female: Development of breast, Lighter
musculature, Shrill and a higher pitch voice,
Broadening of hips due to fat deposition
 Reproductive Roles
Reproductive roles is those that procreate and sustain the human race e.g.
reproducing children, looking after children, caring for the sick, cleaning, washing
up. These are usually maintenance roles without any monetary value attached to
them.
• Male: To produce, maintain, and transport sperm (the male reproductive cells) and protective
fluid (semen) To discharge sperm within the female reproductive tract during sex. To produce
and secrete male sex hormones responsible for maintaining the male reproductive system.
• Female: Creates hormones and is responsible for fertility, menstruation and sexual activity.
The female reproductive system enables a woman to: produce eggs (ova). Protect and nourish
a fertilized egg until it is fully developed.

The men are the head of the family, the decision makers in family planning, and decide the
number of children, decide about whether to go to hospital for the baby - the breadwinner.
If they see health as important, then they can provide the money for transport.

The reproductive responsibilities of women includes the care and maintenance of the actual
and future workforce of the family (childbearing responsibilities and domestic tasks).

Sexual orientation is a term used to refer to a person's patte

Sexuality is an important part of who we are as humans. Be

factors may be different for different people.

Sexual Orientation?
Many people discover their sexual orientation as
teens or young adults, and in many cases without any sexua
l experience. For example, someone may notice that their s
exual thoughts and activities focus on people of the same g
ender or both genders. But it’s possible to have fantasies or
to be curious about people of the same sex without being h
omosexual or bisexual. And they may not pursue those attr
actions.

Be Changed?

Experts agree that sexual orientation isn’t a choice and

can’t be changed. Some people who are homosexual or
bisexual may hide their sexual orientation to avoid
prejudice from others or shame they may have been taught
to feel about their sexuality.

Sexuality is about your sexual feelings, thoughts, attractions and behaviours
towards other people. You can find other people physically, sexually or
emotionally attractive, and all those things are a part of your sexuality.

A person’s sexuality, or sexual orientation, determines whom they do or do not

feel attraction toward. This attraction is typically sexual or romantic.

Sexual attraction
describes a person’s desire to have sex or form a sexual relationship with other
people. It often also describes physical attraction, or lack thereof, toward other

Romantic attraction can describe a person’s expression of love within a relatio

nship. This relationship does not have to be sexual, and a person does not have
to experience both romantic and sexual attraction to have a sexuality.

Asexual is an umbrella term that encompasses a broad spectrum of sexual orientations. Asexuality is a spectrum. Some
people may experience no sexual or romantic attraction toward anyone, while others may experience varying degrees of
sexual or romantic attraction toward people.

Those who identify with this orientation do not have to abstain from sex to be asexual.Some orientations that exist within
the asexuality spectrum include:
o Sex-averse: This is when a person is averse to
or entirely disinterested in sex and sexual
behavior.
o Sex-favorable: This is when a person has
positive feelings toward sex in some
situations.Sex-indifferent: This refers to those
who feel neutral about sex and sexual behavior.
o Cupiosexual: If someone identifies as cupiosexual, they
do not experience sexual attraction but still desire to
engage in sexual behavior or have a sexual relationship
o Libidoist asexual: This term refers to those who identify
as asexual but experience sexual feelings that they can
satisfy with masturbation or self-stimulation

A person’s sexuality determines whom they feel romantic or sexual
attraction toward. People may feel that labeling their sexuality helps
them deal with any oppression or difficulties they face. It may also help
them find a community in which they can share their
experiences.People may also find it helpful to know the terms
describing other sexual orientations. By knowing the terminology,
people can better understand another person’s sexuality.
