LESSON 1: THE YOUTH: THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH
FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND MEMBERS OF THE OPPOSITE SEX

• Youth Relationships with their family- Family relationships are often reorganized
during puberty. Teens want more independence and more emotional distance
between them and their parents. A teen's focus often shifts to social interactions and
friendships. This includes same-gender friends, same-gender groups of friends, and
cross-gender groups of friends. Supportive and close family relationships protect
your child from risky behaviour like alcohol and other drug use and problems like
depression. Your support and interest in what your child is doing at school can
boost their desire to do well academically too.
BUILDING POSITIVE FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS WITH
TEENAGERS: TIPS

• Love and appreciation-Show your child how much you love and appreciate them. This can be as simple as saying ‘I love you’
each night when they go to bed or giving them a high-five.

• Family meals
Regular family meals are a great chance for everyone to chat about their day or about interesting stuff that’s going on or coming
up. If you encourage everyone to have a say, no-one will feel they’re being put on the spot to talk. Also, many families find that
meals are more enjoyable when the TV isn’t invited and mobile phones and tablets are switched off!
• Family outings
Try setting aside time for fun family outings – you could all take turns choosing activities. A weekend away together as a family
can also build togetherness. Our article on teenagers and free time has more ideas for things you can do as a family.
• One-on-one time
One-on-one time with your child gives you the chance to stay connected and enjoy each other’s company. It can also be a chance
to share thoughts and feelings. This might be as simple as going for a walk together, watching a movie, or telling your child a
story. Or you might find a regular hobby to do together, like cooking or yoga.
• Celebrate your child’s accomplishments
Celebrating your child’s accomplishments, sharing their disappointments, and supporting
their hobbies sends the message that your child’s interests are important to you. You don’t
have to make a big deal of this – sometimes it’s just a matter of showing up to watch your
child play sport or music, or giving them a lift to extracurricular activities.
• Family traditions
Family traditions, routines and rituals can help you and your child set aside regular dates and
special times. For example, you might have a movie night together, a favourite meal or
cooking session on a particular night, a family games afternoon or an evening walk together.
• Household responsibilities
Agreed household responsibilities give children and teenagers the sense that they’re making
an important contribution to family life. These could be things like chores, shopping or
helping older or younger members of the family. It helps to give your child some say in
which responsibilities they take on.
• Family rules
Agreed-on rules, limits and consequences give teenagers a sense of
security, structure and predictability. They help your child know what
standards apply in your family, and what will happen if they push the
boundaries. When your child is involved in making your family rules,
they’re more likely to see them as fair and stick to them. Negotiating
rules with your child can also help you to reduce and manage conflict
with your child.

• Family meetings
Family meetings can help to solve problems. They give everyone a
chance to be heard and be part of working out a solution.
THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR
FRIENDS
• Friendships are important to teenagers on many different levels – from being a support
network to providing both positive and negative influences.
• Learning to start, change or maintain friendships is a skill teenagers all need to learn
and work on.
• Friendships can be a network of great support and can offer protection against negative
peer relationships such as bullies.
• Learning positive friendship skills can help them socially so they feel happier and more
confident.
THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR OPPOSITE
GENDER

1. Understand each other

Traditionally, male is assumed to be tough, independent, calm, sensible and strong while
female is assumed to be gentle, mild, thoughtful, sensitive and fragile.

2. Accept each other
Everybody is unique. Everyone has different background, personality and thoughts. If you
understand the basic differences between both genders, then learn to admire each other's
strengths and accept each other's shortcomings, you will get along well and harmoniously.
• Learn from each other
You can learn from each other's characteristics and strengths. Boys do
not need to force themselves to be extremely masculine; on the other
hand, girls do not need to force themselves to be extremely feminine.
You can both be strong, confident as well as caring and gentle.
• Look for similarities
You should look for each other's similarities, for example, interests,
hobbies, personalities, etc. You can join activities in which you are
both interested, sharing each other's experience and feelings. If you
have similar opinions, it is easier to establish rapport and develop
precious friendship.
• Choose friends carefully
You should look for friends who are respectable and trustworthy,
good friends can help you to improve. Do not judge from one's
appearance. You can decide whether you should spend more time
with him/her or stay away from him/her through observing his/her
speech and manner which often reflects his/her personality.
• Be sincere
You have to be sincere when you are making friends with the
opposite gender, appreciate and respect them, feel free to show your
concern, pay attention to other's reaction and beliefs, be considerate
and supportive.

FROM THIS MOMENT
BY: SHANIA TWAIN
I do swear that I’ll always be there.
I’d give anything and everything and I will always care.
Through weakness and strength, happiness and sorrow.
For better for worse, I will love you with every beat of
my heart.

From this moment, life has begun.

From this moment, you are the one.
Right beside you is where I belong.
From this moment on.

From this moment, I have been blessed.

I live only for your happiness.
And for your love I’d give my last breath.
From this moment on.

I give my hand to you with all my heart.

Can’t wait to live my life with you, I can’t wait to start.
You and I will never be apart.
My dreams came true because of you.
From this moment, as long as I live,
I will love you, I promise you this.
There is nothing I wouldn’t give.
From this moment on. Oh…

You’re the reason I believe in love.

And you’re the answer to my prayers from up
above.
All we need is just the two of us.
My dreams came true because of you.

From…this…moment, as long as I live,

I will love you, I promise you this.
There is nothing I wouldn’t give,
From this moment.
I will love you as long as I live.
From this moment on.
