Introduction

● Wind energy is the energy of

the wind currents which is
further converted into
mechanical energy and
electrical energy.
● Innovations are essential in
this sector due to the
underutilized nature of its
potential.
A new method?

● VIV Resonant wind generators can

act as a new way of harnessing
wind energy.
● Use of an oscillating motion
instead of conventional rotational
motion.
● Using vortex induced vibrations for
generating mechanical motion
instead of treating it as a problem.
● Novel technology still under
development.
Vortex induced vibrations
● These are motions
induced on bodies
interacting with an external
fluid flow.
● In aeroelasticity, the air
can induce an oscillatory
movement in a body if its
natural resonance
frequency and the vortex
shedding’s wake frequency
are similar.
General Design

● The mast performs the

oscillatory motion.
● Currently, the most
developed option to obtain
electrical energy is
electromagnetic induction,
especially by using a
permanent-magnets
alternator.
● Conventional rectifying,
filtering and electrical
regulation methods are
equally applicable as
expected.
Benefits over traditional methods

● Always oriented
● Easier fabrication
● Less space required
● Greater life span
● No braking needed
Problems

● The creaking noises of oscillating cylindrical bodies would be a

problem.
● The original makers of this technology have not yet started
manufacturing making it a red flag.
● Available testing data is on large stable winds whereas the most
lucrative usecase is for turbulent small turbine areas.
Conclusion

While there are still challenges associated with the implementation of VIV
resonant wind turbines, such as the need for advanced materials and control
systems, ongoing research and development efforts are likely to overcome these
obstacles and further enhance the performance of this technology. As the world
continues to transition towards a more sustainable and renewable energy future,
the VIV resonant wind turbine represents an exciting and promising development
that could help to accelerate this transition and reduce our reliance on fossil
fuels.
