INTRODUCTION
■ Designing energy recovery systems that are pollution free has become
a significant goal within the research community.
■ One of numerous systems that have been proposed is Generation of
Electricity using Speed Bump (SBPG system) that produces electrical
power by utilizing the movements of commuting vehicles on
highways, boulevards, and streets.
■ This project attempts to show how energy can be generated using road
speed breakers with possible mechanism required. The generated
power can be used for lighting near the speed breaker.
■ In order to reduce the use of non-renewable resources and save it for
future generations we adopted this technique.
Abstract
Using speed bump for power generation by using gear
arrangement and electronics gadgets. Large amounts amount of
electricity can be generated saving lot of money. And if
implemented will be very beneficial for Government. When vehicle
is in motion it produces various forms of energy like, due to friction
between vehicle’s wheel and road i.e. rough surface HEAT Energy is
produced, also when vehicle traveling at high speed strikes the
wind. The principle involved is POTENTIAL ENERGY TO
ELECTRICAL ENERGY CONVERSION.
There is a system to generate power by converting the potential
energy generated by a vehicle going up on a speed breaker into
kinetic energy. When the vehicle moves over the inclined plates, it
gains height resulting in increase in potential energy, which is
wasted in a conventional rumble strip. When the breaker comes
down, they crank a lever fitted to a ratchet-wheel type mechanism (a
angular motion converter) which in turn rotates a geared shaft
loaded with recoil springs. The output of this shaft is coupled to a
dynamo to convert kinetic energy into electricity. This is the short
process for Electrical power generation through speed breaker.
The basis of the speed bump system is the mechanical mechanism since it
dictates the changeable amount of energy. The most common and efficient
mechanisms used in speed bumps are the roller, the crack-shaft, the magnetic
and the rack-and-pinion.
Roller mechanism
In roller mechanism, a roller rotates when vehicles pass over it [8]. This
mechanism allows the dynamo which is connected to a rotor shaft to rotate
and generate power.
Crank-shaft mechanism
This mechanism changes the vertical translational motion of the speed
breaker to a rotational motion through speed-breaker and crank-shaft
connection. Therefore, the dynamo which is connected to a spur gear through
a shaft is receiving the rotation, consequently, power is generated.
Magnetic mechanism
A magnetic mechanism is mainly built from translators and stators [10].
When the vehicle passes over then bump, the translators move downward and
generate power in the stators.
Rack-and-pinion mechanism
Rack-and-pinion system that is constructed such that the rack is
connected to the speed breaker. The speed breaker receives a
vertical displacement upon vehicles fleeting over it. Clearly the
pinion will rotate and the kinetic energy generated due to vertical
displacement of the rack motion is transferred to a dynamo that is
connected to the pinion shaft.
Advantages
1. Low budget electricity production
2. Less floor area
3. No obstruction to traffic
4. Easy maintenance
5. Suitable at parking of multiplexes, malls, toll booths, signals,
etc.
6. Uses: Charging batteries and using them to light up the streets,
etc
Disadvantages
1. Selecting suitable generator.
2. Selection of springs.
3. Achieving proper balance of speed and torque.
4. It gives low electric output
Future Scope
o Such speed breakers can be designed for heavy vehicles, thus
increasing input torque and ultimately output of generator.
o More suitable and compact mechanisms to enhance efficiency.
