EXTINCTION
OF MICROORGANISM,ANIMAL AND PLANTS
Hello!
I am Aishanie A. Oden

3
EXTINCTION

• A species is said to be extinct when it no longer lives

anywhere on the planet.
• Extinction occurs when the last members of a species die
because they cannot acquire the food, water, shelter, and/or
space necessary to survive.

4
MICROORAGANISM
• A microorganism is a living thing that is too small to be seen with the naked eye.
• Examples of microorganisms include bacteria, archaea, algae, protozoa, and microscopic animals
such as the dust mite.
• Microorganisms live in water, in soil, and on the skin and in the digestive tracts of animals. This is
why all living things must have immune systems – while many microorganisms can be helpful to
them, some can be harmful and cause disease.

5
OX
VIRUS
• Microorganism: Smallpox virus(orthopoxvirus)
• Smallpox is a serious and often deadly viral infection. It's
contagious — meaning it spreads from person to person
• Date of eradication: Declared eradicated in 1978(virus
conserved in certain laboratories)
• Estimated date of destruction of the last samples:1999-2002

6
POLIOMYEL
ITIS VIRUS
• Microorganism: Poliomyelitis virus(genus poliovirus)
• A probable case of polio is defined as an acute onset of flaccid
paralysis of one or more limbs with decreased or absent tendon
reflexes in the affected limbs, without other apparent cause, and
without sensory or cognitive loss.
• Poliovirus is a member of the Enterovirus genus, family
Picornaviridae. .
• Estimated date of eradication: 2004 unknown

7
Leprosy
bacterium
• .Hansen's disease (also known as leprosy) is an infection caused
by slow-growing bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae.
• It can affect the nerves, skin, eyes, and lining of the nose (nasal
mucosa). With early diagnosis and treatment, the disease can be
cured.
• Estimated date of eradication: 2010

8
Microbes
• Microbes are everywhere. They are found in the ocean, in the
soil, deep in the crust of the earth, in ice, in hot springs and
attached to and within other organisms as pathogens,
commensals and symbionts
• Eradication: 1982-1993

9
Archageddon
• Archaeageddon: how gas-belching microbes could have
caused mass extinction Study suggests gene transfer led
to sudden release of methane 252 million years ago,
killing most life on Earth

10
ANIMAL
• Animals are simply defined as multicellular, eukaryotic, aerobic
organisms which feed on plants and other animals as their
source of food.
• Animals can be divided into five distinct groups: mammals,
fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

11
Rhinoceros western
black
• Black rhinos are the smaller of the two African rhino species.
The most notable difference between white and black rhinos are
their hooked upper lip
• The rarest of the black rhino subspecies, the Western Black
Rhino was officially declared extinct in 2011. Their extinction
was caused mainly by poachers killing them for their horns,
which are highly prized on the black market and used in
traditional Chinese medicine

12
Eastern
cougar
• . A member of the big cat family, the Eastern Cougar was
believed to actually be a subspecies descending from the North
American Cougar.
• Eastern cougars used to primarily prey on white-tailed deer. By
the late 1800’s, white-tailed deer were almost entirely
eradicated and as a result, the cougars began to die out as they
simply had no prey to feed upon.
• Eradication: 2011

13
Hawaiian
crow
• . Alalā Corvus hawaiiensis, also known as Hawaiian crows, are
endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and found nowhere else in the
world. Revered in Hawaiian culture, these football-sized birds
with dull black feathers are social, extremely intelligent, and
well-known for their raucous calls
•  The main factor leading to its extinction was habitat loss,
mainly due to logging and agricultural operations
• Eradication: 2002

14
Scimitar Oryx
• . Scimitar oryx is a culturally and ecologically significant
species across North Africa and Arabia. This desert antelope
was driven to extinction in the 1980s by hunting and
competition with domestic livestock
• Eradication: 1990

15
Socoro dove
• he Socorro dove is a form of dove that is pretty much on its
way out of the world. They are typically average in size in
comparison to other doves, but have uncharacteristically long
legs.
• . Made totally extinct in the wild by 1972, it was usually found
in Socorro Island, off the western coast of Mexico. They were
found here in abundance at one stage, although it was very rare
to see more than one male and one female together at any one
time. This was because feral cats and larger birds tended to
wipe out their populations quite rapidly, so it was always to
make sure that large groupings of these birds were never
together at any one time.
