Introduction:

Flood : A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is

usually dry.

Urban Flood: Urban flooding describes the flooding of land or

property within a constructed environment, especially in locations
that are more densely.

Urban flooding is caused by a lack of drainage in an urban area.

Background of Urban Flooding
Urban flooding is significantly different from rural flooding

Urban areas are densely populated and people living in vulnerable

areas suffer due to flooding, sometimes resulting in loss of life.

Urban areas are also centres of economic activities with vital

infrastructure which needs to be protected 24x7
Causes Of Urban Flood
Impact Of Urban Flood
• The impact of urban floods is manifold and takes a long time for the affected area to get
back to normal.
• It causes loss of life and property due to the chances of spreading of water-borne
infections.
• It disrupts the normal working of the city by damaging water supply, communication,
transportation, and infrastructure.
• The environment is further damaged as the vegetation gets washed away during the
extreme flow of water.
• Animals also suffer from diseases and loss of shelter due to flooding.
• Diseases spread when sewage and solid waste wash into houses and buildings.
• The psychological impact of losing lives and property is huge and the recovery process
time-consuming.
Methodology To Reduce Urban Flood
Rainwater harvesting
Increase green roofs
Construction of permeable roads
Improved drainage system
Avoid new development on wetlands and floodplains as much as possibleIncrease the natural space along
riverbanks and in flood plains to enable safer riverine flooding.
Create basins or small reservoirs to retain rainwater in the city.
Construct large-scale, underground rainwater retention tanks.
Reduce debris and waste in the drainage system to reduce blockages.
Work with neighbouring municipalities and regional/national authorities to reduce and slow the flow of
flood water from beyond city boundaries.
Construct building-scale rainwater tanks, green walls and other building-scale green infrastructure, such
as green roofs.
Protect public and private property in flood-prone areas.
Replace impermeable surfaces across the city with permeable, ideally green, options.
