Of Farmers
 What is Seed Village ?
 “A seed village” is a village where a trained group of
farmers is active in the production of seeds for
various crops and caters to the requirements of
themselves, other farmers in the village, and
farmers from nearby villages in a timely and cost-
effective manner.
 The non-availability of quality seeds in oilseeds
and pulses is one of the main reason for lower
production, so quality seed is the need of time.
 Introduction
 Good quality seed alone increases the yield by 15-
20 percent.
 The seed village programme includes the
participation of state government, SAU system,
public sector, cooperative and private institutions.
 The concept of seed village which advocates village
self-sufficiency in production and distribution of
seed.
 To fulfil local demand, timely supply, and a fair
price.
 Establishment of Seed Village
 The present programme of seed village scheme is
having two phases.
1.Seed production of different crops.
 Selection of area.
 Seed Supply.
 Capacity building.
2.Establishing seed processing unit.
Seed production of different crops
Seed village scheme is to promote the quality
seed production of foundation and certified
seed classes.
The area which is suitable for raising a
particular crop will be selected, and raised
with single variety of king.
 Seed Supply
 The foundation / certified seeds or University
labelled seeds will be supplied by the
University through KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA
(KVK’S) and Research Station at 50% subsidy
cost to the identified farmers in the area.
 The farmers will use these quality seeds and
take up their own seed production in a small
area ( 1 acre ) for their own use.
Establishing Seed Processing Unit
 Seed processing and packaging is very important aspect in
seed production.
 The location of seed processing centres is based on the

available infrastructure and convenience.

 Such a place will be well connected with roads and

transportation facilities.

1.Seed garden cum clearer
2.Bag closer, trolleys, scales and furniture
3.Building to house equipment
4.Seed storage structure
5.Seed threshing and drying yard
6.Information center
 Advantages
 The seed will be genetically and physically
pure.
 It completely lowers the cost of production.
 The problem of varietal mixing during
processing will be avoided because of single
variety.
 Seed management after harvest is simple.
 From sowing to harvesting, mechanisation is
conceivable.
