What is a website host?
• A website host is a service provider that allows website owners to
make their website accessible on the internet by providing a server
to store and manage their website files.
• Website hosts offer different types of hosting services such as
shared hosting, dedicated hosting, and cloud hosting, each with
their own advantages and limitations.
• The quality and reliability of a website host can significantly
impact the performance, speed, and security of a website, making it
crucial to choose a reputable and trustworthy host for your website.

What’s the difference?
• Shared hosting involves multiple websites sharing the same server and resources, which can lead
to slower performance and limited flexibility compared to dedicated and cloud hosting.
• Dedicated hosting provides a dedicated server for a single website, offering better performance,
security, and control but also requiring higher costs and technical expertise.
• Cloud hosting uses a network of virtual servers to provide scalable and flexible hosting solutions,
allowing website owners to adjust their resources based on their needs and only pay for what they
use. It offers high reliability, security, and redundancy, but may require advanced technical
knowledge to set up and manage.

• Let’s check it out!

Open-source vs proprietary
• There are many open-source, pre-built CMS options available, some of which are
free.
• Open-source means that anyone can see the code that the CMS is built with and
can manipulate or improve it.
• An open-source CMS can be more rudimentary than paid options, but is also easy
to tailor to your needs.
• Some widely used open-source CMS solutions include:
•WordPress (www.wordpress.com)
•Drupal (www.drupal.com)
•Blogger (www.blogger.com)
•Joomla (www.joomla.org

Open-source vs proprietary
• CMS should be selected with the goals and functions of the
website in mind.
• A CMS needs to be able to scale along with the website and
business that it supports, and not the other way around.
• Examples include:
• WordPress for personal blogs or brochure-type sites
• Drupal for more complex community and publishing sites
• Magento for eCommerce
sites.

Gestalt Design Laws and Principles

entirety before perceiving the individual parts

Gestalt Design Laws and Principles

• The principle states that the human eye sees objects in their
entirety before perceiving the individual parts
• Do you see the dog?
• As it relates to web design,
people see the whole of
your website first—before
they distinguish the header,
menu, footer, and so on.

Gestalt Law of Proximity

• People group things together that are close together in space.

They become a single perceived object.
• For effective web design, make sure that things that do not go
together are not perceived as one.
See how you group
the elements
together?

Gestalt Law of Similarity

• We group similar things together.

• This similarity can occur in the form of shape, colour,
shading, or other qualities.
• Here we group black dots into one group and whites into
another one, because,
well, dots of the same colour look
similar to one another.

Occam’s Razor

• When given several competing hypothesis, Occam’s razor

urges you to choose the one that makes the fewest
assumptions and, thereby, offers the simplest explanation.
• To put it in the context of web design, Occam’s Razor argues
that the simplest solution is usually best.
This is about functionality as
much as visual appeal.
