Helix angle -
Major diameter(d)
It is the maximum diameter of an internal and
external screw thread.
The screw is specified by this diameter.
it is also known as out side diameter.
Threaded Fasteners – Specification
Example of a typical thread specification (in inches)

Threaded Fasteners – Specification
Example of a typical metric thread specification
M6 x 1 - 4H5H
M - indicates thread form is metric
6 - major diameter in millimeters
1 - pitch in millimeters
4H5H - tolerance (capital letters for internal thread, lower case for
external thread)

Autumn Quarter P. 18
Minor diameter(d1)
It is the smallest diameter of an external or
internal screw thread. It is also known as root
diameter.
Pitch(p)
It is the distance in the axial direction from a
point on one thread to the corresponding point
on the adjacent thread.
Lead (L)
It is the distance the screw thread moves in
one revolution. Lead is equal to the pitch in
the case of single start threads. It is twice the
pitch in double start and so on.
Thread angle(α)
It is the angle included between the sides of
the threads measured in an axial direction
Helix angle(ψ)
It is the angle made by the helix of the thread
at the pitch diameter with a plane
perpendicular to the axis.
Tan (ψ) =
